I am feeling and hearing a cluncking sound when making turns or going on bumps does anyone have suggestions? I have an 04’ excursion limited 6.0 turbo diesel. Pls help
Could be lots of things depending on the condition of the suspension. Are there any loose ball joints? How old are the shocks? What do the shock, track bar, and sway bar bushings look like. What condition are the sway bar end links in? How do the cab mount bushings look?
I replaced my entire front suspension and was still getting a thumping sound that sounded like someone was pounding on the floorboard with a mallet. Turned out to be cab mount bushings.
I had a heavy clunking noise and feel in the steering wheel when turning.. Took me a while to discover the cause. Turned out to be frozen U-joint on passenger side drive. Ended up doing a complete front end rebuild. I live in Maine so the truck is exposed to a lot of salt & calcium for ice and snow
mine is a RWD, I had clunking from stabilizer bushing and links and another time due to shock absorber mount bushings. I could'nt find the bushing for the shocks that i wanted, so i just bought new OEM shocks, not expensive. The stabilizer bushings were a little tricky, they looked good but they weren't, it does not take much looseness to get noise.
Mine is a 4x4 with leaf springs. The Trac bar mount on the axle had broken off. I unbolted the top side and just took it off. No more clunking
How is the steering now when you drive over bumps and rough road? Mine was unstable. There is a company that makes a replacement, kind of spendy but it looks sturdy. https://autofab.com/i-10039304-2000-...r-bracket.html
Or what I did is asked a friend to weld it back together. If you don't know anyone with a welder I don't think a Shop would be very expensive. A couple of options for you but I would seriously look into fixing it to keep the front end solid.

I drive it everyday. Just got back from New Mexico and it was fine.(1500 miles) towed an old trailer home. I have replaced the leaf spring bushing though so that probably helps. The only thing I notice is a little bump steer on big bumps.
Mine cracked about a year ago and I welded it. This time it just broke in a new place. It's tough because that track bar is for stopping bump steer more than anything but it's forcing leaf springs to move in an arc instead of they're designed( straight up and down). I think it's definitely better to have it but I don't think it's that big a deal to leave it off. And yah I saw that part and it's super beefy. And also expensive. When I have more money to throw at this thing I may buy it
A bad bushing in the track bar will have you wandering a bit.
I had to replace both the bushing and the ball joint for the track bar.
Sure made a big difference.
Have you checked your lug nuts? I've had them make a similar noise when one or more would be a little loose. I know it sounds a little rare but I check mine twice a year now because of it happening more than once.
