Fuel bowl filter cap looking for other owners experience

7.3 fuel filter and attached cap directions state hand tighten Gasket V pointing up ( take some diesel wipe it on the gasket )
I hand tighten it , It leaks every time I change it
How tight do you guys tighten it ?
Right now to get it to stop leaking I had to crank it down where the cap is almost touching filter housing

Looking for other owners experience

Yup, gotta crank it down....from my experience anyways. There is a decent amount of pressure for hand tightening to work.

Thanks Just videos and direction say hand tighten But it leaks every time I saw a filter with oring type of gasket instead of the V shape gasket wondering if these would seal better?

I use a deep 6 pt socket and 1/2” ratchet and tighten it down starting AT The head of the wrench, then slowly working out to the end of the handle until it’s tight. I use NAPA GOLD filters that come with a new cover with every filter.

I had lots of trouble with the stock gasket and decided to go my own way, and it has worked out perfectly. Here's a thread I started a long time ago, complete with a part number. I've been using these gaskets for 7 years, and just hand-tighten the cap. No leaks in 7 years:

The last couple changes I used Wix. They use square gaskets for the top seal.
You still have to crank them down because of the 50+ psi fuel pressure.

I'm pretty scrawny and no way I could hand tighten the filter cap appropriately. In fact, the first time I changed the filter I cranked it down with a big screwdriver laid across the lid and it sprayed fuel all over my engine bay twice before I figured it out. I always have to crank it down super hard to get it all the way down and sealed.

I use Baldwin fuel filters none have ever leaked. Also make sure to check your fuel pressure it might be over pressuring.

I use Racor filters and the OEM cap and am very careful that the gasket is oriented properly, the proper way to orient it is not what you'd expect without following the diagram packaged with the Racor. I also use a heavy duty strap wrench like this

on the cover, no chance of damaging it that way. (great for the oil filter too) Haven't had a leak in the 10 years I've been doing it. That being said I just ordered a pack of the MM orings to have in case of emergency or maybe to help a brother on the road.

I picked up one of these from a friend that did not need it any longer.

I just saw that Riffraff has billet caps that look really nice, but a bit pricey for me. Maybe if I ever win the lottery or I come into a lot of cash...

Your post jogged my memory and by george I have one of those too, I vaguely remember ordering it when someone posted it on here. I just found it in the top of my rollaway where I keep odds and ends and I put it in my filter wrench drawer so I'd see it next time. In some ways getting older and forgetful is not too bad when you find stuff you forgot you had, kinda like Christmas all over again!

I just use the oil filter wrench or my large channel lock pliers upside down with each handle in opposite sides of cap to tighten. It works & its cheap.

I use the Dorman cap which allows a socket wrench to tighten it and an OEM filter. zero leakage.

I'm another one using a 314,000 mile and 18 year old original OEM cap with a pair of large channel locks as described above (post #13), and my original cap has NEVER leaked in the 14+ years I've owned the truck. In this time, I tighten the cap down hard, and have changed the filter some 14-15 times, always using either a Motorcraft or Racor filter element with the beveled o-ring and the bevel UP.
