easiest way to tell if everything is working is to find some mud (or snow) , put it in 4X4, lock the front hubs, and ease into the mud/snow, then stomp on the throttle. if all four wheels spin it is working.
if the truck has open differentials both front and rear, you may only see one wheel front and one rear spinning.
... then leave the hubs locked and shift it into 2WD, then drive for a while on pavement.
If you get binding and crow-hopping while you turn, then your transfer case isn't disengaging (this is very unlikely though)
If you get vibration, growling and/or binding, either as it rolls or as you try to turn the steering wheel, then you might have a U-joint (or more) that's due for replacement.
may want to jack all four wheels off the ground first to check things out. I certainly wouldn’t want to go into mud to test it out - what if it doesn’t work? Then you have to tow it out, clean it up, and............jack it up to check out what’s wrong.
Oh I'm no stranger to 4x4 just always had cherokees never had lock outs before
Then really nothing that you aren't already used to. You just need to lock your hubs when you're not in the truck (duh!) and you can (but don't need to) unlock them when you're done using 4WD.

ok. a lot of people do not realize 4X4 is not for dry or hard pack and do all kinds of damage.

that takes all the fun out of the surprise of will it work or not!!
i just found out yesterday the Electric shift in my 2014 is out again when i stopped on ice and it would not shift into 4 wheel.
i have had the truck for 3 years, and needed 4 wheel 3 times. and it has never worked when needed.
next week when i get to put it up on the rack to diagnose it, it will work because i do not need it.
once we shut down for the winter i am ripping that stupid electric crap out and putting a manual shift transfer case into it.
