Fuel pump sucking air

I have a 2000 Excursion diesel. 182k on it.
My fuel pump is sucking air. I don't know how that can happen with a full tank.
Has anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
I need to drain the tank so I can drop it. Tried to use a siphon and only got about a gallon out.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Might be a bad o-ring on top of the sending unit.

It's more than likely the quick disconnect in the line right next to the fuel pump on the tank side. Those fittings are meant to lock air tight under pressure...like on the engine side where the fuel is being pumped up to the engine under pressure. So when fuel is being pulled...like on the tank side...they leak and suck in air. I think there is another quick disconnect fitting there close to the tank. I would start with the one at the pump.

Quick connect

So I still need to drop the tank to get to those connections?
Still not sure how to get the fuel out

If you have the tank almost empty you can attach a hose to the front of the fuel pump and run it into a container. When you turn the key on the pump will run and/or pump fuel for a couple seconds. This is how I did it.

Fuel pump

I will try removing the quick connect at the pump and hooking a piece of tubing and see if that is the leak.

Research Hutch and Harpoon mods. As mentioned above the factory quick disconnects are great for pressure applications but tend to allow air in in vacuum apps.Part of these mods replaces the factory hose and eliminates the QD's

Yep, Quick Disconnect seals and intake strainer are a weak link in the Superduty. Hutch and Harpoon mod, along with an external pre-pump strainer - the Racor PS120-02 is a popular (and sound) solution.

With a full tank, you might look at taking the bed loose.

I used a cheap vibrator type fuel pump (the crappy ones that should never be installed in a vehicle) powered by an ATV battery, and ran a 3' piece of fuel line down the filler neck, and then filled 5 gal jugs (several) when I pulled my tank. It was fast enough - I did other jobs and just watched the 5 gal tanks fill as I went. Pulling an empty plastic gas tank is a treat, compared to what it could weigh!

Fuel tank

Finally got the tank out. Come to find out it wasn't full of fuel after all. Barely 3 gallons left in it. Pulled the sending unit out and this is what I found.

Filters not much better

I will harpoon the tank but go back with new screen and filters for sending unit.
