'77 F-140 SWB 4x4 Engine and interior questions

I few months ago I got a '77 F-150 custom 4x4 SWB that I plan to restore (maybe not a full frame off) for my son when get turns 16. The body is in good condition with very minimal rust. It was stored in a barn for the past 20 years which helped with the rust but mice had chewed on every wire under the hood. It had a 351m, NP435, D44, 9", with I'm sure 3.50 gears. The truck appears to be unmolested. The PO had installed a set of headers and prior to it being parked in the barn the original engine had some work done and never ran right. I bought it based on the engine not running.

Since all of the duraspark wiring was useless I bought a HEI style dist. from CRT performance (I read some good reviews). But never got the original 351m to even fire. Ended up getting a FREE 400 from a friend at church from a 1971 LTD with 39,000 original miles.

Initial questions: Are there any plug wire sets that are the right length to allow them to be run cleanly ( I will need HEI car plugs)
From what I have ready 1971 was one of the best years for the 400, I am contemplating swapping to a 4-barrel intake and carb, any real benefit in this, or anything else I should do prior to installation. I am not going to do anything internal yet. I want to get it installed and running so I can see what else needs attention (brakes, fuel lines, electrical, wiring, etc..)
What all ford seats will interchange with no modifications? I personally like the 04+ 40/20/40 bench, but I read somewhere that those seats will cost a few inches of leg room and I can't afford to lose any of that. Anyone here know for sure?

I bet that the 71 LTD has a front sump oil pan, that is some thing you might want to swap around to a rear sump pan. Or at least research it. I know on a 2wd 460 it has a front sump pan and when you put that in a 79 F250 4wd and leave the front sump you CAN hit the pan with the front axle pumpkin. Not sure if the 1/2 has the same issue. Worth checking.

Ck with Painless or American Wiring for a harness.

I believe the 71 351M/400 was straight u timed and did have any smog retardation in the timing set. 4bbl carb and alum intake good, a cam even better. Up to a 96 seat will bolt in using your older sliders on the newer seat. Using a REAR seat from a 01 Super Duty will work with your sliders, 2005 seems to work, 2011 bench will work.

It does have a front sump oil pan. I already have new pan gaskets and hope to swap pans from the original 351 to the 400 this weekend so I have the correct rear sump pan.
That black leather seat does look awesome in the black truck. Is that yours? Did you loose any leg room?

Remember to have all you need to change the pick up tube also. Not my truck, But I did get the pic off FTE. Advanced Search time. As far as leg room that truck with the black leather is a SC so he probably has room to move then back a bit or at least as needed.

I was unaware that the later model SuperDuty seats would swap with our tracks! Now I need to keep my eyes peeled for a good setup at the junkyard.

Super Duty REAR seat ONLY, at least that is what the guy said in his thread. See post # 251 https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-build-16.html

1971 was the first year for the 400, it was initially installed in 1971 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars.

Do not believe the miles shown on the odometer, as it reads to 99999.9 then returns to ZERO!

I know those old odometers would roll over but he said this one had not. And it showed, this thing still had the original spark plugs (best I could tell), the speedometer gear from the trans looked like it had never been turned. The exhaust manifold collector bolts all came loose with no issues. NOT A SINGLE DROP OF OIL OR CAKED UP GRIME UNDER THE CAR.

It had belonged to his aunt, in her old age she started to run into some things so she quit driving and the car just sat. After she passed she left the car to my buddy and it had lived under a tree near his barn for a while.

Everything from the 351m will bolt to the 400. The 351m typically had a 11" clutch and the 400 had a 12" clutch so the flywheels are different but balance is the same. They do interchange, I ran a 12" flywheel/clutch on a 351m.
