Hi guys!
I'm new to this forum with a simple question. I live in switzerland and imported a 49' F1 with a 302 Ford SB engine swap.
I would like to add a Trailer Hitch (Curt 15510, class 3/4), I asked before the Licensing Authority if it is possible and they said yes, if I can prove the maximum towing capacity of the Truck and the capacity of the Hitch. Well the Hitch is OK, but I could not find any "official" information about the Capacity of the Truck.
Does anyone know where I can find this information? As the Truck is licensed "type X" (import) and old, they don't have any informations about the Truck and it is enough if I can Show a copy of maybe Owner Manual, Shop Manual or Wikipedia or whatever, I just need to show them something "credible".
This question has come up many times in the past and I don't recall anyone ever posting an "official" tow rating.
Does your truck have stock brakes? Even with an upgrade to front discs, the frames on these is nothing like the frames on modern 1/2-ton trucks, it is much more flexible and nowhere near as heavy or deep. What are you wanting to tow?
just big,
There are numerous threads on this website asking the same question. I found this one which should be helpful for you to calculate the max. towing capacity.
Yes stock brakes, i would like to tow at least a caravan something like 2500pounds
Assuming the trailer has brakes, either electric or surge hydraulic brakes, you should be OK, although I'm imagining you driving thru the Alps. Your truck's brakes better be in good shape too!
like Mixer man says, looks like the oldest technical specifications you might find is about 1961. this site has a lot of old sales brochures nothing for F1 trucks. And even the 1961 information only listed combined load rating for the bigger trucks. The light duty trucks, F100, F250, F350, only lists GVW.
That's just craziness. I had a 31 foot travel trailer I pulled with my 97 F250 with the 460 engine. It was only 10,000 pounds and it seemed like a load for that. I would not want to pull a bigger and heavier trailer with anything less than I had, and surely not a tiny (by comparison) F100.
I've never seen a published "tow" rating. I don't think they specified stuff like that back then. I think the best you can hope for is some overall truck specs and the GVW ratings. Here are some that I have
just big,
bobbytnm is correct in his statement that back in 1949 they did not publish "tow" ratings. Because back then they did not have the Federal safety regulations nor the SAE Specifications to define the limits of "tow" ratings.
I think if you show your "authority" this "itstillruns" calculation method
And this Ford published information from bobbytnm:
and calculate out the rating based on the "itstillruns" method and bobbytnm info, using your installed horsepower and current gear ratio, you will have the information your "authority" needs for the "tow" capacity of your truck.
