towing??

I have an '03 Explorer XLT w/ a 4.0. It came with the factory Class III towing package (the smaller receiver), will I be OK towing a 2600 lb. boat with this? Or should I upgrade to the larger receiver hitch? The specs in the manual say the vehicle itself can accomodate up to 3500 lbs in towing, however I've heard conflicting stories about the capability of the class III hitches....anyone with similar weight capacities tried towing with it??
Also, I've heard to always turn the O/D off when towing ...is this correct?

Take it for what it,s worth if it was mine I would instal a bigger hitch you never can tell you might want to tow something larger sometime. Good luck
