51524 rear end pinion seal F2
I am currently busy fixing up the rear end, and besides new wheel cylinders and brake linings (which Chuck could provide) I will need a pinion seal.
The old one must have leaked a long time, judging from the grime around the neck. Is there any substitute for the Timken 51524 rear end pinoin seal obtainable?
From the chart, the retainer and seal go by the number 4674 and 4676. Supposedly the seal is No. 4676.
Moreover, the pinion bearings are a litte loose and will require adjustment. The preload is described like: tighten until the drag is 12-16 Inch-lb, which is close to nothing and I can't think of any means to measure this properly. My torque wrench starts at 20Nm.... any practical tips how to accomplish this mission?

I have a spare new-old-stock seal from my F2 (now sold) that I was going to use on the F3. The bag it was in has '8M 4676' hand written on it. I ended up putting a Dana 60 rear end in the F3 so I won't be needing this seal anymore. The rubber seems to still be in good shape.
I'll happily send this to Germany for you because I know how hard it must be to find parts over there.
Since it was an unsealed bag, and things happen over the years, we should confirm the dimensions first.
The total outer diameter is 3- 1/8" to 3-1/32" from front to back due to the taper. The inner diameter is 1-3/4" to 1-5/8". Not including the rubber thickness.
Will this help?

hate to say so, but your offer might not help. The pinion shaft from my axle is only 1-1/4 inch in diameter. Much to my surprise it seems, as if somebody did an upgrade to a more modern seal previously? I was prepared to find the deteriorated remainder of a rubber thingy like to one you have. On the other hand, the seal seat and how it is pressed in look flawless, so might be original.
When browsing the parts catalogues, 8M 4676 seems to fit passenger cars and the F1&F100. The one for 38-47 3/4 and 1 ton Trucks is 01Y4676. As the F2&F3 still have the pre war axle, this seal might be the right one. May be Bill could clear things up a bit....
Has anyone a suggestion on setting correctly the rear end pinion bearing preload? Chuck must have done this numerous times, but I do not feel right to pester him with asking questions which are so closely related to his business.

Whoever wrote '51 Ford on the package had a F1 or a car.
