Pinion seal part # ?

I have a 47 with a newer rear end from a 49 but I cant seem to find a pinion seal that fits. Can anyone give me a link or a part number for it? Also towards the end of the yoke there is a groove. Is that normal or wear?

Usually there is a number on the seal? The Ford # is B6A-4676-A, looks to be a normally stocked item. NAPA part # is: NOS 15788, NAPA AUTO PARTS

Edit: That sure doesn't look the same, are you sure that's a '49 axle? It looks like it. The dimensions are on the NAPA link for comparison.

Thanks bud Ill head over in the am and check fitment. This seal is ground down pretty bad. No rubber at all so I didn't find any #'s. On the yoke shaft is there suppose to have a deep groove where the seal meets the backing? I have a few mm grove where the seal sits and am worried excessive wear will cause leaking...

NAPA seals a Speedi-Sleeve for this, check out this thread for info:

So it looks like the speedy sleeve repairs the area where the pinion seal sits? Looks like the exact area where I have a groove on mine. I have another yoke from a identical rear end and the same wear pattern is there. Both pinion seals were fused when removed.

Looks to me as if something is wrong with the pinion shaft bearings, or the nut holding the yoke onto the pinion shaft became loose and it is allowing the yoke to oscillate instead of running true. This wobble caused the yoke to wipe out the seal and contact the seal can which caused the groove.

You will have to fill that groove before a speedie sleeve will work. Locktite will usually fill the void under the sleeve.

Either that or space the yoke out so the seal rides on a clean area. You can buy shims of the correct ID and OD and thickness at a good machine shop.

I believe it's in that thread I referenced, you don't have to turn the yoke's surface smooth for the speedi-sleeve. They include a tube of something like LocTite that fills in voids under the sleeve and it's a tight fit anyway.

I can't recall any seal that didn't have the part number stamped or etched onto the metal part, have you scrubbed it up and looked? The other way is to measure the OD of the yoke and the ID of the housing and they should be able to cross reference from that.

Give Superior Axle and Gear a Call - (or try web site)

Hey Marine1200,

I have just been searching for parts for my D44 rear end in my '56 and have spoken to Superior Axle and Gear who provided me with replacement part numbers.

As long as you have identified your rear end, you could give them a buzz to ask for the part number of the seal you're looking for.

Their phone # is 888 522 2953 or 888 845 0470

You might also try their web site for your seal: Superior Axle & Gear

I found a pinion seal that is almost identical and it looks like it might work.

This might sound like a backwards question but Im assuming the black ring is the pinion seal, but it looks like the pinion seal could be the large circle towards the perimeter.

Well, both "circles" need to seal, but the one in the center is the dynamic seal, the other is sealed by an interference fit. It isn't loose, is it?

PS -- share the part number please!

I spent the most part of two days tracking a pinion seal down. Even taking measurements and going to a few machine places couldn't help me. I went to Nappa and they let me rummage through all of their pinion seals. I finally found one almost identical to mine. I greased it and put a bit or RTV and it looks fine. Now if it leaks is another question.

Its from a Toyota believe it or not. Part number 15701.

I checked the stamp on my rear end and it was #18418 then a 44 by the rear cover.

Oh and it is not loose.

Funny thing I must have went through 47-56 ford truck pinion seals and most of them were too big for my yoke.
