Just got my truck about 6 months ago and when i bought it, the seller said the Ac was NOT working, SO i checked it out and there is no belt on it, any1 know where I should begin to get this ac up and running?? here is a pic for reference. I know nothing about these systems, but have a buddys that does home heating and ac. thx for your help!
First spin all the pulleys by hand. Make sure they don't rattle or bind. Then turn on the compressor (turn your dash switch to AC to engage the compressor clutch). Spin it by hand then. See if the clutch is locked up. Doesn't look like it should be.
Then put a belt on it. BEFORE turning it on and seeing if it works, take a small flathead screwdriver and press it into one of the Schrader valves. If it hisses, it's for freon in it. Proceed to test. If it doesn't hiss, take it to a shop the does AC work and have it checked out.
If it does NOT hiss, do not turn it on! No freon means there's likely little to no oil in the compressor, and forcing it to spin at engine rpms while engaged with no oil is a fast and easy way to smoke your compressor.
If you feel up to it, pop a fitting or two loose and check your O rings. Green rings means it's suitable for r134 freon and it should be used with it. Black rings are for r12, which in many places is outlawed and has to be converted to r134 unless you "know a guy who knows a guy".
Depending on your mechanical abilities and desire, it may be worth it to you if the system is EMPTY to replace the lines, the drier, all the O rings, and blow out the condenser and evaporator. That will cut down on the parts cost at the AC shop.
That is very positive news for you, the fact that the system is pressurized. That means it isn't full of regular air, so it won't be all corroded inside and the receiver/dryer doesn't need to be replaced. If the clutch isn't frozen up and the compressor turns, you might just get lucky here with a belt.
If it's got freon on in it, toss a belt on and take it to an ac shop to have the system vacuumed down. I'm guessing it's got r134 in it because the compressor has been replaced. Let em vacuum it down and refill it and you should be good to go!
Well judging by the rebuild tag, that is a 2001 rebuilt compressor. Very likely it has R12 and I would keep it R12 as it's not a very big system. The york compressors don't like esters or pag oil and rely on the mineral oil in the sump.
