I ve got a 93 Explorer XLT 4x4, 4.0,auto, and I'm guessing the clutch went out on the AC because while I was sitting with the air on HI smoke started coming from under the hood along with a slight intermittent sqeaking noise (like a belt slipping, but my guess was the AC's compressor was locking up).... shut the truck off, then shut the ac off. driving since then wth no problems minus AC usage. Can someone please give me a step-by-step on ac clutch replacement,or would it be better/easier just to go to the junkyard and get a replacement compressor. Also need to know how to loosen the serpentine belt. One more thing .... EXACTLY what engine and tranny is in my truck?
I posted this in the other thread as a reply to this so I'll also post it here...
In this case I am guessing that the AC clutch is actually working as it is able to engage and disengage the pulley. Sounds more like the compressor itself has seized up. However, that is just a guess on my part as I do not do a lot with A/C.
Most likley the Comp has locked up. You need to have the system Vacum pumped by a local shop replace the comp and have it recharged and checked for leaks as there can be metel shavings that can get cought in the system. Also be sure the accumalator is cleaned or replaced.
You will need firewall forward replacement as your compressor has piled up and has been contaminating your entire system for quite some time. Less expensive is a family gulp sized slurpee and roll your windows down.
