Hello guys from the 61-66 forum. I also have a 1992 Ford F250 4x4 with a 5.8L ZF 5spd. Over the summer I had driving issues and the end result is now a dead fuel pump. Thanks to the previous poster replying in the other thread. What I need to know is what size my tank is. The options seem to be 18 and 19 gallon, plastic or steel and before or after the rear axle. I will have to look at the material and location and post that but how can I tell if it is 18 or 19 gallon?
I believe 92 has a steel 18 gal same as the 91... Also, a shortcut you can use is to measure the approximate location of the fuel pump, and cut a 5x6" hole in the bed floor, and set up the piece you take out as a removable panel for future use. But- you may find(as I did) that the locking ring is rusted out, and you may have to replace the tank as well. ADDITIONALLY- the replacement Motorcraft fuel pump for the 91-93 or 94 F series trucks was updated- you will need a pigtail for the wiring harness, as the connector changed from the flat one with four terminals directly on the pump, to one with a pigtail and weather proof connector. From Ford, the harness side pigtail is $37.00. From LMC, about $6.00. (you need 2) Also, the angles of the pipes out of the sender changed, and you may need to recoggolate the lines... Went from a "v" pattern to a parallel set, pointing to the truck left side.
All in all, making the hole made the removal of the tank easier, as I could disconnect in place. Don't forget to remove the fuel pump relay and fire up the truck till it stalls to depressurize the system.
If you can't guess, most of my weekend was spent replacing BOTH fuel pumps, the aft tank, injectors & fuel filter in my 1991 F150...
Scott that was a lot. Truck is a beater so cutting the box would not devalue it. I have shopped on Rock Auto and they show just a motor which they call a sending unit. Cheap enough at $37 canadian but it said nothing of all those extras. My front tank is hooped according to the previous owner and rock auto has the tank for 253 including the pump and straps. It might be easier to change out the front tank so long as it does not pump into the rear tank. I am not looking to spend any real money on this truck as it is only a dump run buggy for maybe another year at most.
