You just want to remove the black **** from the arm? They are glued on. If I'm going to replace the **** anyway I use a hammer and bust it into pieces.

Doesn't look much like the one on the arm which is correct for my truck. The replacement has many more grooves and of course you can see the shape is quite different.
Luckily that installed **** is in great shape so I just need to paint that arm the correct color and tig weld the shift stub to build it back up some.
Is there anything to be aware of if I'm removing the column shifter arm only- not taking the steering wheel off or anything else- just want to paint the arm and replace the hand grip. Looks like a nut and bolt is all there is to it. Is anything gonna slip down the column once the arm is removed???
Thank ya'll in advance.

Assuming you have an auto trans, originally would have been a roll pin but common that was replaced with a bolt. There's a spring inside but shouldn't worry since can't go anywhere really. Most important thing to keep in mind is the arm is all that keeps truck in park on the automatics. Make sure wheels are chocked!
