The **** is press-fitted onto the shifter arm. The top of the shifter arm has splines (grooves parallel to the length of the arm). The **** also has splines on the inside surface. This is the reason why the **** can't simply be twisted off or unscrewed. You have to pull straight up on the **** to remove it. Alternatively, you can CAREFULLY slit the side of the **** with a sharp knife and pry it off.

ok thats cool thank you for the info now I know what to do but I have another question if the gear shift **** thats on my ranger now just pulls off how would I get the one that I'm buying to fit because the one that I'm buying screws on or would I just have to get one that can be press fitted or one that slips down onto the shifter arm?
