New to me 1965 Us Navy F100 DSO 83

Hey everybody,
I picked up this truck a few weeks ago, it's a Navy used F100. She's not the prettiest girl at the dance but I've been driving her daily and working on her in the evenings, I've had great luck using the search function on this forum to fix the issues I've tackled so far so thanks so all that contribute. I hope the lessons I gather as I keep tinkering away will allow me to give back some in the future.

She was grey, then tan, now blue.

k2evd I've seen pictures of your truck on here its a real Beut! My ultimate goal is to get mine looking like she would have during her service. Right now my goal is to get her driving good enough to be able to take a couple hour trip in her.

Wow, what a unique find. Good luck. I'm sure she'll be tough once complete. Maybe some AA guns mounted in the bed for any Migs that approach? 🤣

Here's a thread with a couple of other guys that own 1965 DSO 83 trucks that are also in the 684xxx sequence.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-airforce.html

All three are configured just about identical

F100
115 inch wheelbase
281 body code
A transmission
09 rear axle
4800 gvwr - this weight rating seems to be unique to the F100 83 DSO trucks and the F251 Model codes, of which there are a few that are owned by forum members.

Two from San Jose assembly and one from Norfolk, VA assembly.

Thanks for the link Chad! I try to save pictures of all DSO 83 trucks. Just wish I could find some more of Navy ones with original paint.

1965 F-100 Military Step Side

Hey 65,
What a great Navy truck. I have a friend here in Wisconsin who took his Navy drivers test in one like yours in 1967. He is looking for pictures of his truck in 67. We will post if we get a picture. We are restoring an Ex Air Force F-100 like yours. But will be returning it to 1960's Olive Drab (mil spec 24087). I have a photo of my father driving one in 1968. Sentimental journey I guess. Your Navy Data Plate is very cool. This is what the military marking would look like on each door.

We plan to drive our restored F-100 from coast to coast in August 2019 in a historic vehicle convoy with the Military Vehicle Preservation Association Lincoln Highway 100 year celebration. The longest parade in America.

Fort Knox KY 1968

Ex US Air Force 1965 F-100 before start restoration May 2018

Great to add you to the list of Military F-100 owners.

Convoy Driver Thanks for that awesome picture of your Dad! If your buddy turns up his photo I'd love to see that too! I hope in a year I'm able to drive my truck up and see you at the termination of the Lincoln Highway. It's about 3 hours north of me, great motivation. I'd love to see pictures as you progress through the restoration.

Thanks again!

The OP's Navy built 65 F100 has a DSO number 830121. I have one here, also from the Navy with a DSO of 830114. Engine, trans, rear etc are the same. I wonder what the difference is other than his being built in San Jose and mine in Norfolk, VA.

Probably not a whole lot of other interesting items in here but here are some DSO 83 related threads and pictures. Couple of F250s in the mix and at least one of which is a 4x4.

Thanks Chad, I love looking at pictures of any DSO 83 trucks.

Shadyside, I've seen photos of your truck here. It's great. If you'd like to see more pictures of anythings specifically on my truck I'd be happy to take a photo for you. Our gauge clusters look a bit different but I suspect mine is the victim of some butchery.

Just curious, were those commercial trucks standard 12 Volt or 24 Volt like so many military units? Joh

I can remember the duty driver pulling up to a P3 to take the crew to the BOQ/BEQ in one of these gray SWB flairsides on several occasions. 13 crewmembers plus luggage took several trips.
