Thinking of switching from my 7.3, I’m going to go look at a 2013 with 220000. What kind of issues should I be looking for with this kind of miles? Expected repairs? Really only concerned with motor/trans issues. The steering axles etc are really not that different from the 2005-07 trucks I’ve had.
Just to clarify you do mean 220,000 miles and not 22,000 miles, correct?
I would hope that the steering components have been replaced. I am assuming this is a pickup truck. If it was under heavy service - hauling a gooseneck trailer, heavy loads in the bed, etc - I would hope the steering system has had a couple re-dos (ball joints, etc).
I would hope the front hubs have been replaced by now - especially if it is 4wd.
I would be curious what work has been done to the transmission.
Check the tires and brakes for wear.
See if the rear axle/diff has been serviced.
Check play in the drive shafts/u-joints.
Check for oil leaks - wet spots even - around the engine block, diff covers, etc.
Yes actually it has 232000, oasis really showed little to nothing. Truck was used by the owner of an appliance repair business. Really only hauled tools doesn’t appear to of had much trailer hauling life. Drove out pretty good. I’m going to grab it again tomorrow or Thursday and look it over really good shifted good, stopped decent, rode really well. Did have a check engine light will scan and see what that is. 100% bone stock still. More concerned with anything I need to be looking at on the motor more than anything. I know my 7.3’s but this is a new breed to me.
Yea I’ll double check that. But if I’m not mistaken the oasis only shows stuff worked on under warranty. This trucks been out of warranty for 130000 plus miles not sure how pertinent what was fixed under warranty is. What are typical issues with these engines? Headgaskets? Egr failures? Injectors? Sounds like turbos are issue from some stuff I’m seeing on the forum.
There was a change in the turbo bearings for 2013. Not sure what it was and I have not been able to track it down either. But that would not be so much of the concern.
Check the radiator for leaks around the seams through the wheel well on the drivers side. Radiators are much weaker now.
I would want all the fluids and transfer case replaced and a new serpine belt on it.
Yea at quick glance the radiator seemed ok, didn’t smell coolant. I do plan to look further at it when I get my hands on the truck though. Anyone know average miles on these with good maintenance before having to do injectors etc?
When my radiator went on my 2015, I had to crawl under and only saw a drop on the frame. Didn't see anything on the radiator itself. Just a small drop of radiator fluid. Nothing on the floor either.
looks like about 20% of its life was at idle or so low of a speed to pick it up as idling.
On the injuectors, who knows. You can check under the hood and look at the CCV housing for the injector codes. If it is still the factory markings for the codes then likely they have not been replaced.
I would certainly do a scan for codes, the pcm can compensate a lot for a bad injector..
