I just locked myself out of my 13 F350XL. When got out remembered to lock the door (I usually forget) but forgot to take key out of the ignition. When realized didn't have my keys went back to truck expecting it to be unlocked but found door locked and can see the keys still hanging in the ignition. My 13 F150 XLT and my 68 F350 won't let me lock myself out with key in ignition so this was a surprise. Unfortunately have only had the truck a couple of months and only had the 1 key, had not had time to get a copy made yet. Can you open the door on these trucks using coat hanger/slim jim like could do with older vehicles? If not what other options are there besides locksmith?
While that would work, it will likely damage the door seal and paint around the door opening.
I have used a coat hanger as a slim jim, and put some slight scratches in window glass doing so.
A plastic wedge and a slim jim is a better option, but I would take the $50 locksmith credit from AAA as a better option. I think that will result in a second key. An expensive second key... Unless that locksmith uses a plastic wedge and slim jim. No AAA? Go get a slim jim at the local auto parts store.
Though some newer vehicles have plates blocking access to this method...
Well I just spent the last hour attempting to fish a piece of wire around through the door seal with no luck. Apparently auto theft is not one of my skills! I do have AAA but have only used it for tow trucks and motel discounts. Good news is the truck is in my driveway and is not daily driver so no need to rush. May try to see if Ford Dealer can source a key from the VIN. If have to get locksmith will be early July before can get one and arrange to be present at the same time unless drag the guy out on a Sunday or in the dark.
I don't know where you live, but here the Sheriff's Office will do unlocks - no charge. Back in the days when I was a deputy, I had a kit with the air pump wedge, a hard plastic wedge and a long plastic coated rod. The office bought them at a local automotive supply store that kinda/sorta specialized in body work, about $50 each. I've seen similar kits on Ebay for less than $25.
Works like a charm, slide the air wedge through the door crack, inflate the wedge, insert the hard plastic wedge (in case the air wedge looses air), slide the rod through the opening you just created, then push or pull the unlock button
Well it turns out u-tube had the answer. Watched a short video and then with the help of a small shovel, a rag and a piece of 1/4 inch re-bar about 4 ft long was able to pry the top corner of door open enough to slip the re-rod through and hit the door lock. Couldn't reach it with the coat hanger. Would have been easier but previous owner tinted the door windows so was hard to see where the end of the rod was and where the button was. To late to stop at hardware store tonight but will be top priority tomorrow to get a couple of spare sets of keys to fit the door. Eventually will probably get a spare chip key for the ignition as well.
Next time (chances are there will be a next time) just call AAA. I work for them up in ny. Call at a time when you can be with the truck doesn't really matter the time, we run 24/7. Superduty trucks are super easy to get unlocked with the right tools. AAA does more than just tows and motel discounts lol.
