I bought a used 96 f 350 4x4 the guy had a key for the ignition but no key for the door locks I really cant understand why. I guess he put in a new ignition since you need 2 keys but why would he not keep the old key?doesn't everyone know the new key wont fit the door .anyway the truck was in such good shape I bought it but I cant go anyplace yet cause I need new door locks.how much would new door locks run?is that what there even called if I have to order them from a ford dealer?and how much money would it run me?or can I get a locksmith to make me a key?I'm really not sure.strange though I looked at 2 used trucks that both had the same issue a key to start it but no key for the door locks.any info will help thanks.
You could go to a locksmith, but it might be cheaper to go to NAPA and get a set of door lock cylinders, I think they still have them.. That way they are new and should last many more years.
Before you buy new door locks try squirting some lube in the key hole. I thought I had the same problem with my new 97 F250 but went to the lock smith first. He said it is a common Ford thing and squirted a little lube in and the key started working. He didn't charge me anything but he gained a customer.
you can get the door lock cylinders online there only $35 eash and come with 2 keys. That would be the cheapest way.A locksmith will hit you up for 200 for a key.
Before I bought my current truck, I was looking at a 95 that didn't have the keys. I checked around and salvage yards wanted like 10-15 bucks apiece for new lock cylinders. I remember a Ford dealership wanted 90 dollars for the set of them. I think you could pick them up for cheaper at NAPA or O'Reilly's.
I think you're missing the point "crusem" was trying to get across, and maybe failing at, these trucks do not have separate door and ignition keys, the ignition key is the key for the door lock.
Not sure of the exact year they changed it, my 87 has a ignition and door keys both yea but my 94 and 95 have only one key for everything.
Use some liquid wrench or WD-40, stick the tube right inside the lock and flush the shi_ out of the locks with it.
The PO probably never locked the doors so the locks have froze up some. Shouldn't take much at all to free them up.
I had the same problem with my truck. I priced the new cylinders at O'Reilly's for $90 for the pair. The local locksmith only wanted $25 to cut me two keys.
FYI... I checked into my door locks when I got my truck and these years of trucks is past what the dealer can look up in the computer to code a new key to your locks. I removed the locks and had the locks smith make me two keys for them and it was only $35 total for him to do it.
