I am trying to help a friend get her old RV running so she can dispose of it. I identified a bad starter relay mounted on the core support. The RV is a two hour drive away and the parts stores are an hour and a half away from the RV. I removed the relay and took it to O'Rileys and got a relay. Two weeks later I went back to install the relay and my 71 year old memory is a little foggy on the wiring. There is a molded cable coming from the starter to the large posts on the starter relay.and that is cool. However there is a bright green wire and two yellow wires also that need to be attached to the relay and for the life of me I can't remember which goes where. One yellow wire is heavier and has a larger ring connector. One yellow wire has a smaller outside diameter connector as does the bright green wire. I know the red/black wire goes to the"S" terminal.
I have searched all over the internet for wiring colors and can't find them Identified. I think something will to the the starter solenoid, something else to the coil and the third to the ignition switch. Do all three go to the terminal coming from the battery or what? This relay has the posts on the top and not the side.
Hey ltdjock, welcome to Ford-Trucks! Sorry it took so long for you to get a reply. Especially for something (theoretically) simple.
Well, "simple" for someone that knows anyway.
I've got a clue, but just.
Yes, the Red w/black is likely the S wire. Easy to verify though. The older ones were Red with a blue stripe, so wondering if Ford changed, or your black stripe is just a dark blue and hard to see?
The two Yellows likely go to the battery side stud. Usually (meaning, in the old days when I knew stuff) the Yellow wires were 12v for things like the horn relay, and battery sensing wire to the voltage regulator inside the alternator. But I don't know if those two functions hold true for your year.
Bright green I'm not sure of. Have to see if I can find a reference somewhere.
IN the meantime though, at least this will get you back to the top of the first page where others can see it.
Good luck.
There are a couple of members here that have extensive wiring knowledge and can post up many of the newer wiring diagrams. Hopefully one of them will see this and throw in some info.
The two large cables go to the large posts, one of the cables post to the starter with no other wires, the other one to the battery pos post cable.
All of the other wires go on the post with the battery cable.
Except the wire to the "S" terminal and it should be a push on red wire with a light blue stripe wire.
The green is a fuse link and will turn into a yellow wire on its way to the power relay common contact from the battery side cable post.
