I just picked up a 1969 f350 manual 4 speed with a 390 and a 2 barrel carburetor and I need to know why it wants to chug out and die and has no power going up long inclines. New distributor cap and all that inside it, new spark plugs, new fuel filter, just the basics and idling it sounds a whole lot nicer and healthier but still so power in going up hill next I'm gonna retune the carburetor and check that out but I don' think that's it. Carb is very filthy should I rebuild it maybe that' the problem? Also if it' been off for a while it becomes very hard to start why is that?
Nice to have the 390. Sounds carb related. Higher load lowers the vacuum and if the passages are not hospital clean, the carb will not be able to react in an appropriate manner. Imperative to get the carb clean on a rebuild. Internal passages, everything. I use a soda blaster and Simple Green. Don't let is soak longer than over night in Simple Green or it will start to react with the zinc and make it go dark. Get the Ford kit. And I would check compression on all cylinders. My 69 F350 dump truck only has 74k original miles and the compression was in the toilet. Turns out every exhaust valve was burnt to a crisp.
Sounds to me like the truck had been sitting for a long time. So there is old gas in the tank and 2X carb passages plugged. Old gas doesn't want to burn as usual.
I gather you changed the points and condenser. There are JUNK aftermarket made in china condensers out there. Been a gazzilion guys here ion this board the past few years having a problem that ended up being that condenser. Buy only Genuine Ford (Motorcraft) condensers. They are not made in china and a good product.
Condenser is part number C9AZ12300A (DC13A)
Points are part number B8Q12171A (DP12).
Carb kit is part number D4AZ9A586A.
All 3 still available from Ford.
