What do you folks do when you need an oil change in the middle of a trip?
I have ~4400 miles on my 2017 6.7 PSD. I will be taking a 3,000 mile trip, towing a fifth wheel at least 2,000 of those miles. I assume I will need an oil change during that time.
I typically change my own oil and use Synthetic oil. I wait until it is 10% or less in my car, so I will want to do the same here.
My first oil change is complementary by the local dealer, but I assume that it's really one free oil change, not necessarily the first. I will verify though.
I have a few options.
Change it early at the dealer, and get it free. Wasting ~2500+ miles on the oil.
Get it changed on the road at Valvoline or similar. I wonder of the kids there know what kind of oil Ford requires, and do they have the right synthetic oil. Or will they put the oil plug in correctly...
Bring oil change equipment with me and change at the stop closet to where I hit the 0-10% number
Some other option I have not thought of.
What do you folks do? Or what would you recommend? Ideally, I would also add a Fumoto valve or similar at the first oil change.
I carry enough oil and a filter with me for an change. Most shops won't have a problem using your supplies. Unfortunately you are still at risk of a screw up. I had a change done where if I had not been watching I would probably have lost my transmission even though it was in for an engine oil change. The kid pulled the wrong plug and I had to yell at him to get it back in. When they went to top the transmission up I asked to see the container and sure enough it was not the correct oil for the transmission the truck had. I would highly recommend finding a Ford garage to do it.

It is just sad we cannot trust a dealership or a store focused on oil changes to do them correctly. Yet I bet many of us have been there with a oil leak from a drain plug or filter or we got the wrong oil. Worst yet I had a dealership strip the oil pan threads and then blame it on me.
If I was the OP I would change the oil before the trip knowing a early oil change is not hurting anything and it was done correctly.
Yep change it at home early. Won't hurt anything except wasting a few bucks and you have peace of mind, which is priceless.
In fact....you pretty much have to. Ford mandates 5w40 for severe service (think towing). The factory fill isn't that....you need one of the approved full syn's. These get hot towing.
FYI...I just finished a 7000 + mile trip towing heavy and have not yet seen the change oil message....but I bet it's right around the corner! Enjoy the trip!
I am doing a service package and I didn't upgrade to the synthetic package. They are changing at Ford with 10w30 semi synthetic up here in Canada year round here in Canada. The 15w40 is not to be used below -7 C. That rules it out for me 3/4 of the year.
I would just take it in to a Ford dealer so the service is on their computer. You get a receipt they did the work if there are any issues. I check the oil level, drain plug, and filter for tightness inside the first 25 miles. If your leaving town same day or next day, I would do this before you start the truck at the dealer to leave.
Install a Quick Change Valve and NEVER worry about ANYONE stripping the drain plug threads again (including yourself)!
I am definitely going to put one in. I may use the shop vac trick to add it in-between oil changes without draining all the oil. I think I need a F106SX.
In today's Vehicle Health Report, I am at 4,547 Miles with Oil Life: 54%.
any of them will work as long as its an F106 choose the option that best suits your personal taste
I went with the F106s (short nipple) and the HK-3/8 hose kit.
As it turns out, I came back from my trip with ~13% oil life remaining. I can bring it to the dealer in the next few days and get my first oil change free.
