Will an F550 power steering box bolt in to an f250?
From what I understand, it bolts in and the power steering lines should fit - but I'll need the Pittman arm for a 550 and a rod end that fits it.
(I'll see if a local parts house has both in stock to compare tomorrow.)
I have a 99 f250 and would like to use the bigger box from a 6.0 f550. (Eventually want to do a full front end swap)
Yes - Redhead Steering makes a great box - got 150k out of my last one - but one particularly nasty pothole destroyed it - so I'm exploring potential upgrades.
For those of you wondering "why bother?": 03-05 front end was a huge improvement over the 99, with the wide track f550 front end being even stronger. My truck truck gets worked hard - so I like any upgrade that makes it tougher.
The 99-03 trucks all ran the same power steering box for f250-f550. Later trucks (I think 07 and up) switched to a bigger (and much more expensive) German made box. Might still make sense if you had a donor truck.
Turns out there is a bigger badder alternative to the original 99-03 steering box available from Redhead for $100 more than the normal box (and they'll port it for hydro-assist for another $100)- makes it hard to justify reinventing the wheel.
Sad that I can't justify the swap, but pretty happy to have found a straightforward solution.
