Hello everyone.
I just wanted to say hello to everyone here. I just picked up my first "antique" Ford and I will be (and already have been) picking through all of the posts here looking for information. I am not 100% certain of what I bought as the guy who had it didn't know, it didn't come with a title, has an older license plate that is no longer in the system, and I have yet to find a VIN or serial number of any sort. (Mind you, I just brought it home yesterday and haven't spent any time taking it apart to locate the one on the bell housing.)
So, any information any of you may be able to provide based on these pictures would be great. What I do know, or at least think I know, is that it is a 46 or 47, 1.5 ton, stake side bed with PTO driven dump, manual transmission connected to an inline 6, and it used to have a brush guard on the front.

Welcome to FTE. You have made a great start, you have pictures in your first post. As stated above your serial number will be stamped into the top of the frame on the drivers side between the fire wall and the radiator, typically it is found near the steering box. It was hand stamped at the factory and may be faint. Steel wool or similar can be helpful on a rusty frame, as can chalk.

A question for you guys that I can't seem to find a direct answer to... are all of the truck cabs the same on these trucks, whether 1/2, 3/4, "tonner", or 1.5 ton?

Yes, the cabs are the same. The front fenders on the big trucks have a larger opening to accommodate the larger tires. There are a few interior details that are different between them as well, like steering wheels and speedometer.

OK. I found a VIN. From what I gather it is *1GT235448*. I dont know if the "1" might be an "I" or not because I am not familiar with the VINs from back.
If you guys could check out the pic and let me know what you think. Also, where can I find a VIN decoder for this truck?
Also, it has a 158" wheelbase.

RestoreYourFord.com under "Technical Info": GT through the 1940s indicates a 6-cyl, 1-1/2 ton, 134" wheelbase truck. It is a 1947 if the first number is a 7, not a 1.
The 158" wheelbase has a G8T designation. I'm sure you did not make a 24" mistake so it is time for this rookie to say "Wait for Stu".

1G is a G series 6 cylinder
T is heavy duty truck (doesn't indicate wheelbase)
The rest is the serial numbers.
That's all the info that can be had from the number. Based on the serial numbers, your truck is a '46.

How might I find out exactly what year the truck is? Would the numbers on the bell housing give me more info?
