I have a 1978 f250 that had a six cylinder in it and I am puting a 460 in it but I don't know what to get for a transmission the six cylinder had a four speed manual but I'm not shure what I need. I still want a manual but not shure on the make.

First, welcome to FTE. Second, we all here LOVE pictures. Feel free to show off your dentside truck no matter how pretty or ugly she may be. And third, look for a ZF5 from a '87 to '97 F250/350/450. Make sure it was bolted to a 460, although I have heard that the diesel models will work too. There are plenty of threads here that go into detail of the swap. If a ZF5 is out of your budget, look for an NP435 or T18. Both are granny 4 speeds, the ZF5 is considered a granny 4 speed with OD. Hope this helps ya.
It would help to know what your current transmission is. If it is a NP435 it has a removable bell housing and is tough enough for the 460. You could potentially re-use the transmission with new bellhousing.

i have what what I believe to be a 73 Lincoln 460 I bought back in the day and rebuilt it now I am trying to put it in a 78 f250 4x4that had a 306 in it that went bad and I don't have any trans parts or anything I plan to use it for hauling and some fun. I have never done a swap like this and I feel lost.
You guys have been clearing a lot up for me but I'm still not shure which trans will best suit me yet or where to find one.
OK... no transmission now. The NP235 is a good choice. It is tough and can handle the power/torque of the 460, was used a lot on Ford PU's and is readily available from yards and several rebuilders. It can be retro-fitted with mostly factory hardware (bell housing linkage ect.).
On the NP435, 1'st is a creeper gear for crossing rough ground slowly or to help get moving when very heavy. In day to day driving, you start in 2'nd and it is functionally a 3 speed. Top gear is 1:1.
The five speed transmissions mentioned have overdrive which is nice but they are harder to find. Some folks have adapted later Dodge 5 speeds. The Tremtec TKO new 5 speed is nice also and expensive.
The NP435 would be straight forward and cost effective with minimum engineering/fabrication. The 5 speed options are more involved and can get quite costly though having overdrive is really nice.

i have the transmision off the six cylinder that looks like the np435 I think how can a person tell if there is no tag on it. Just a case number. And if it is right do I need to modify it
See a transmission identification guide link. That should help make sure you know what you have.
If it is a NP235, the major change would be a new bellhousing to mate it with the 460. The bellhousing is bolt on and the 460 shares the same engine bolt pattern as the 351M and 400 so a correct housing should not be too hard to find.
