New gas tank with inboard fuel pump

Have ordered a new gas tank and EFI fuel pump kit to replace the rail mounted pump I have now. I have never liked the performance and noise of the rail mounted pump. It seemd to over heat easily and really whine about it.

Will be removing the F32A Mustang style between gas tank, weather permitting, and see if this solves my issues. Will use new, same tank model, but modified to accept the fuel pump.

Tank pictures

I ordered the parts today for Tanks Inc kit.

I am using the F32A aftermarket 1973 Mustang tank currently, have ordered the same tank as I didn't want to cut and weld on a used tank. The fuel pump is a kit that will fit into the tank after opening a 4" hole on top of tank.

I think I may have to fiddle with the sender as it may not be compatible with the gauges I have,

I'll take pictures as I go, but am currently troubleshooting the voltage regulator and EEC relay problems that came up early December.

On your old set up were did you have the pump mounted and was the filter befor or after the pump the reason I'm asking is you shouldn't have the problems your talking about if the pump is as close to the tank as possible and the filter is after the pump with fuel being pushed through not pulled.

My fuel pump now is located on the passenger frame rail, behind the cab, fuel filter is after that.

The in-tank fuel pump is going to be more efficient, and quieter. (in theory)

Before you go through all that work you should try putting a lift pump in the tank. There high volume low pressure pumps that assist high pressure pumps that are mounted up closer to the engine. I had the same problems noisy and running very hot till I moved the pump back next to the tank. So I didn't have to use a lift pump never had another problem and much quiter. Just giving my thoughts.

Sure..now you tell me

I may post video with pump running. It has never performed well, probably due to starving for fuel or some other design issue. I have tried everything from running it with fuel cap off, to actually replacing it.

I hope the new install makes it all go away, it is definitely annoying. Now I can take the time to vent the tank properly and make sure the fuel is regulated to the fuel rail.

Well it sound like your really set on that new pump but I'm sure you would love to know WHY hopefully you'll see something when you remove the old system. One more thing I forgot to mention is your return line its best of it returns under the fuel level so that it doesn't create a bunch of air bubbles in the tank all the time. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Here is what I'm up against. The fuel pump is after market mounted on frame rail behind cab. It has got to go.

Video post

Sorry for the lengthy video, I intended to post the edited version but you get an idea of the fuel pump noise.

This really is the only large project left to do on the truck, the rest will be mostly cosmetic on the interior. Well that and the voltage surging.

Waiting on parts

Been waiting for a month on delivery of replacement tank and fuel pump; follow up today seems I am in a "back order" condition. A shame as the weather has been perfect for getting the job done.

Worked on re-doing my tailgate latches. At least made progress on those.
