Everytime my tank gets down to 1/4 the truck leans out and dies. There is gas in the tank and the tank has been "renu'd" 2 weeks ago. The fuel pickup is not bent and goes to the bottom of the tank. The sender is also new. All lines and connections are sealed. The system runs fine after I fill the tank until I get it to 1/4. I have an almost new holley electric pump (the red pump). I can always hear it running. It is located just under the tank.
After it stops I disconnect the fuel inlet to the carb and suck gas through then reconnect. It then runs for approx 15 mins until it has used all the gas in the lines, then stops. I can do this over and over.
Any ideas welcome (apart from the obvious "don't let it run below 1/4)
thanks Rusty
It sounds more like you are actually on empty, even though the guage is showing 1/4. When it happens, take the line off the carb and crank it over and see if any gas is being pumped from the tank. ( don't forget to remove coil wire from coil first! ) If you don't get any fuel from the tank, it's simple your guage is not reading correctly and you're out of gas!
Thanks for your response - but heres the catch..... there is definately gas (I removed the sender and looked) and if I was out of gas howcome I can draw it through by mouth. Its an electric fuel pump so I actually dont need to crank her over just swithch the ignition on and I can hear the pump working.
You might have a problem keeping it primed. I had simular problem when I put an efi 5.0 into my 71. I had to use two fuel pumps because the high pressure pump would not pull the gas out of the tank, it wouldn't prime itself. So I used a cheap low pressure (5 psi) pump from jcwhitney before my high pressure.
Also check to make sure that there are no leaks between your tank and the pump and even in the spout in the tank. One last thing to check, because you used that gas tank slosh stuff, is that your vent is not clogged, if no air allowed to enter the tank as the gas exits, that's a problem. I mean trace it all the way to the charcol canister if you have to.
Last's my 2 cents
You may have something there. I will probably give the second pump a go - see if that works. The vent is actually in the gas cap, and I have sucked on it, it seems to be letting air in which would balance the pressure difference. You have lost me on the charcoal canister though? What do I need charcoal for?
thanks
Rusty
Rusty, Were you using the holley pump Before you Renued the tank? When the (next time) truck stops running at 1/4 tank disconnect the fuel line going to the pump. Fuel should run out!!
(There is a `screen` in the bottom of the holley pump!!!)
That means the problem is some where else. Do you have a filter BEFORE the pump In Feed?

John, Yes I was using the pump before I renu'd and I did have the problem before. I do have a large filter between the tank and pump as well as one after (although the one between the tank and the pump is a recent addition). I think your onto something there though - I am pretty sure that if I disconnect the feed into the pump it will be dry (I will give it a shot tomorrow) I am begining to wonder if perhaps the pump (which is a pusher) might need a puller pump before it (as one of the other emails mentioned) I just cant work it out! If you have any more ideas, please let me know.
Thanks
Rusty
I'm sorry, the charcoal filter was used on newer trucks, I know that my 71 has one. It sits in the engine compartment right on the radiator core support. My vent from the gas tank runs all the way to the filter. I think its purpose is to filter out the smell of the gas and nada más. My 51 doesn't have one though and I'm not sure if they were on the 58s. I still have a hunch that there is a pin hole on the pick somewhere causing the pump to pick up air once the gas reaches a certian level.
but no sé.
oh, I just thought of another thing. I don't know how yours is but on my 51 the pickup comes out of the bottom of the tank, which means that you have gravity on your side. But my 71, the pickup tube comes out of the top which means the pump has to pull the gas up and then gravity takes over and pulls the gas down to the pump. This might make a difference.
Yes, the fuel line does exit the tank on the top. So it could be that the extra pressure is too much when the tank gets low. At the moment I have upped the pressure in the pump to 19psi and I will see what happens and I still have the old mechanical pump if i get no joy. You could be right about the pin ***** but I really hope your not. I will just scrap it and put in a fuel cell, if that's the case.
I don't think that is such the best idea either. The little that I know of carbs. the fuel is sent to a bowl, which has a pin valve that is controlled by a float. If you jack the pressure too high, that valve will fail causing you to flood. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Your definately right, too much gas can be a bad thing (its running a little rough). I have a holly regulator I will install, Along with the 5psi fuel pump I ordered from jcwhitney (talk about overkill). I am so sick of pulling over at the side of the road and sucking gas.
Thanks Again
Rusty
