This Bronco is my first 4x4, i have manual locking hubs, oh it's 87' by the way, the locking hubs do not look like any i've seen in any pics and catalogs, the end caps dont come off, there are no screws, its just a solid long tube that the wheel slides over, it has a flange that goes over the wheel studs with a rubber O-ring between the flange and the rotor and whole thing is held on by the wheel! is this the factory stock set up, if not what kinda set up is it? Thnx DW
You have the rare & hated "flange-type" hub locks that were only used in '87 & early '88 on fullsize trucks. The BIIs & Rangers used them, so if you think you can rebuild yours, you might find some of the little ones in a junkyard and try to scavenge parts out of them, but I don't know if that'll work.
You can change everything from the stub shafts out to the "normal" parts so you can use common hub locks, but it's probably more expensive and definitely more work than swapping in a complete D44IFS axle with normal locks. You should be able to find one in decent shape in a junkyard for $50-200.
That figures how do i allways end up with the odd ball stuff?
Well for now the seem to work just fine, But are you saying Its Less trouble to change the whole front end from like a newer model than to change over the hubs? Thnx DW
Yes. To change the hub locks, you have to disassemble your axle far enough to remove the outer stub shafts, then buy all that stuff for normal locks and install it. It's much less work to swap the whole axle. I've done it.
Okay thnx steve! when i put my new motor in this fall I'm planing on rebuilding the entire drive line all at one time, so i'll be looking for another front end mean time! Thnx DW
well i would be, but by time i paid for gas down and back and paid you i dont know if it would be worth it, I'll have to check localy and see what i can get one for. Thnx DW

I have an '87 w/the auto locking hubs and it does have the outside screws that hold the hub on. Does this mean that it is not the "flange type" hub locks? I need to know because I plan on switching over to manual locks very soon and want to make sure its possible. Thanx
you should be fine, i also have the 87 autos, i was told they are not the same and are the same as all the other auto hubs minus the weird 3 srew ones.
