camera question

Ordered a new F350 supercab DRW today, and got the ultimate trailer tow camera package among other goodies. I am thinking of building a custom bed for the truck, which means I will lose the tailgate as well as the camera in it. My question is (and no one at the dealer seemed to be able to answer this, but I'm hoping someone here can) is how this will work? Will I be able to attach a different camera (such as the customer-mounted trailer camera) on my bed and connect it to the factory wiring? I pound nails........so I have no idea about these things! Thanks!

I read on an RV site where someone took a $19 cam from Amazon and connected it to a Ford tailgate connection and it worked fine, but that was with an older system. There probably are not enough of the new systems out there yet to really dig into this. You will have the CHMSL and hence a camera which is neatly packaged but it focuses mainly on the bed itself. And I would be willing to bet that last years camera mounted in a blue oval would plug right in and work on your new bed. As far as the wiring you would need to be sure the lead is long enough, but if you are building a whole bed just be sure to use good practice if you need to extend any cables. Just a few thoughts, not many actual facts or experience with the cameras here.

Thanks! That's kinda where we left it..........order it and hope we can make it work somehow. It's disappointing that Ford doesn't have some kind of tech dept that actually understands the nuts and bolts of how these trucks are built that the dealers can contact. Especially with the ever-growing list of gadgets and doo-dads that are available!

That will develop as the product matures. It is still a newborn, remember. And then the aftermarket will kick in as well!!
