Why not 6 3/4' rather than 6 1/2'
I sure would like to see the 6 1/2' bed go to 6 3/4'. That's why my previous truck was F-250. Motorcycles don't fit worth a darn in the 6 1/2' bed if you want to close the tailgate. Why would it be such a big deal? I realize it probably doesn't make that much difference to people unless they're motorcycle nuts. What do you guys think?

I have a reg. cab 04 and if it weren't for the fact they are so ugly with the 8' bed I probably would have gotten an 8' bed on it. I know what you mean with the 8' bed and a supercab, it makes for a long truck, but they tend to ride failry soft, but suck to park or manuever.
Even worse, a Super Duty crew cab 4x4 with an 8' bed. I use to tool around in one as a service truck when I was an HVAC guy. It did ride great though, had a 7.3 and a 6-speed manual, it was a tank.

Hey Rancheroracer, You presented an interesting problem to which there are a few possible solutions. As mentioned, you could get a bed extender. Not as secure as a tailgate but bikes should probably be strapped down anyway. Another solution that I like is in modifying the tailgate itself. You could take it to a good bodyman fabricator, or if you are have the proper tools, tackle this yourself. The tailgate is 3 1/2" thick ( 3" at the top and bottom) and you are wishing for an extra 3". If you cut the inner skin away, perhaps in a 15" X 53" rectangle, and welded in a steel 3" deep box (modified to clear latch mechanism) into this area. This would give you the 3" you need.
