From what I understand the N Series Trucks are pretty rare. Does anybody here have an old N Series they use on their farms? Are they capable of towing a 40' 5th wheel Toy hauler Camper? Can they handle a 40' 5th wheel flat bed with 3 pickup trucks on it? I have been searching for a backup for my 1994 F350 Powerstroke. What engines were available in the gas versions? Was it just the FT Engines in there, or did they also use the big 477 and 534 Heavy Duty enginrs? All input and stories appreciated on expieriences with the old N Series trucks. The one I found is a 1965 N600. Love the look and the stance of these trucks....
Not sure a 600 would have the bigger motors. You may have a 330--very popular. I see you have a decode thread open, so let's see what motor and ratios you have.
A 330 is going to run out of poop about 60-65 mph. If you like 4 mpg with your foot glued to the floor, you'll like the 330 at highway speeds with a big load. 361/391 not much better.
With that flat bed you are in CDL territory as your trailer will be well over 10000 lbs.
Agreed. The 401-477-534 were not available in the 600 series. I think you had to go up to at least the 800 series to get them.
In my honest opinion you will be unhappy with the truck and your intended use. It's going to have a rear axle gear ratio in the 6.00:1 range. That's how they got a 168 HP engine to move a load. Just as 85e said it will top out at 60 mph while getting 4 or 5 mpg.
Maybe a diesel conversion would be in order. I'm putting a 7.3L IDI with the ZF 5 speed, a 3 speed Brownie and a Dana 80 with 3.73 gears in my '58 F600.
No one has been able to decode it. I was hoping numberdummy would chime in, but he hasn't appeared. I have a 391FT in a 59, but this engine looked different. I will try to post a photo. It has a 2 speed rear
Something about the engine in your photo sure looks like a 370/429 to me. It's the heads/intake manifold.
Are you talking about the pictures in post 4 above?
Picture 1 shows the plugs with the //\\ angles. The FE/FT and the Superduty (401/477/534) have plugs like that, not the Lima motors. This is an FT, and it matches the VIN.
Picture 2 shows a valve cover that makes you want to say 370/429, but you can see the line between intake and head under the valve cover. Only found on FT/FT.
