Quick 2018 5.0 towing report

Did a quick camping trip last week, here’s there results.

Towing a camper just under 5000 pounds. Probably another 750-1000 pounds of gear in the truck. Trip was about 190 miles consisting of ~150 of highway, 40 miles of 30-45 mph secondary roads. Speed on the highways was mostly ~65, the cruise control set to that speed. Drive mode was “Tow/Haul” 100% of the time.

Total mileage is a little less on the return info as I initially forgot to reset the trip info. Weight on the return was probably 300-400 pounds less as I drained the water tank in the camper before returning, and we drank all the beer I brought out. Note that this was not an attempt to get the best mpg possible, but to record the mpg the way I’d normally drive. I was very impressed with the power of the 5.0, great acceleration even at highway speeds. It was interesting to watch the gears the 10 speed chose, it did what I considered a very good job.

Edit: Removed two gears from the tranny.

Funny enough I know a guy who swears up and down that his 2002 7.3 came from the factory with an Allison due to a joint venture between Ford and GM.

Naturally I started mocking Allison a few years later when his 4R100 failed.

What is your gear ratio? And is it 4x4?

What? How many did you get? Only 10? Crap, I'd complain!

Maybe it was spell checking, lol?

Sorry, I swore I put that info in the post. But I also said it was a 12 speed, so...

3.31, 4WD

One added comment: I found the truck's mpg calculation was pretty accurate. There were some miles driven - maybe 20 miles or so - before and after the 191 trip mileage, before I topped it off with 15.004 gallons. So 211 miles / 15.004 gallons yields 14.06 mpg

Cool. My truck has 3.73s.... and the 6.2. (2013 F150).. I ask because maybe in the next few years I plan to buy a 5.0 truck..but not sure what gears to get. I know gears have a big affect on fuel economy

That's about what I see in my 16 F150 5.0 3.31 4X4 towing up the Colorado passes. If I am really hammering on it I'll get down to 12.5, but 14-14.5 is a good average. Steady highway is about 16mpg.

My guess is that with the 10 speed, the diff gearing matters much less, as with the 10 speed there are just many more gear options over even the 6 speeds. When in tow/haul mode even well below the max towing weight I rarely if ever got in to 10th gear. So with the same load, when a 3.31 is in say 7th, a 3.73 might be in 8th, i.e. final gearing is all that is important. (The above just an estimate, I didn't do the actual numbers.)

How much weight are you towing when you do that trip?

Very nice, and the 5.0 does good at those elevations and grades?

For sure. No complaints at all at altitude or pulling loads. I occasionally pull a 10k Kubota tractor. Doesn’t break a a sweat.
