New trucks, what's under the center console extension?

If that makes any sense. I prefer a truck with captains chairs (or whatever they call them now) and a center console. But I don't like that center extension thing that connects the console to the dash. I'd prefer to have the center hump open for some additional leg room, etc.

So the question is, can this thing be removed and leave the console in place? I'm guessing it will leave a large opening on the front of the console that will need to be addressed. What about the dash? Is there a large void there too, or does it connect to the regular dash so it won't look too bad?

Anyone taken one apart to see?

Sure it could be done....if you're a very good fabricator and can cut a straight line. You would have to have some way of finishing off the console. Here's some pics I just took of my KR, there's a little panel under the cup holders that come's out but you can't see the floor. It doesn't look like it connects to the dash at all.

Underneath the center console are the air conditioning air tubes that route air to the rear seat area and to the passenger and driver seats for climate controlled seats .

I was hoping to hide some amplifiers under there but there really isn't any free space. You COULD do what you want, but it's more than just cosmetic, you'd need to re-engineer the thing a little bit. The air conditioning ducts would be the biggest issue I think.

I have a 9yo and the rear A/C and rear power outlets totally sold me on the console. He loves the truck.

Like Just Strokin pointed out, all of the duct work and bracketry is underneath. I have one that I'm retrofitting into an '08 so I snapped a pic for ya:

I have heated/cooled seats with the three up front seating in my '11 lariat. And it's 'clear' between the dash and the seats so there must be away it can route cleanly? I thought that the difference in seats was just the centre console section between the captains chair and three up seating in the new lariats? Never looked into it much so someone can correct me if I'm mistaken.

The little holder/tray in my pic in the centre is aftermarket, just sitting on the centre 'hump'. Best picture I had on hand. If you want the roomier feel in the front I'd look at the three up lariats. There's still a huge storage bin that flips up under the centre seat and with the centre seat flipped down there's another nice big storage spot arm rest and drink holders. And then of course you've got real seating for six if ever needed, though I don't ever use the front centre as a seat, I guess I would if I had to.

@Squisher is correct. The AC/heating ducts that run under the new consoles are for rear ac/heat ONLY and have nothing to do with the cooled seats. The cooled seats run off of a small fan under each seat so they are not really 'AC' seats, but definitely help keep you butt cool .

To the OP...your best bet would be to install an 08-10 center console as they do not connect with the dash. I just helped a buddy install one in his 2012 Lariat and it was pretty straight forward with some modification to the font bracket. I have a 2012 flow-through console in my 07 and it bolted right in with ZERO modification, just FYI

You can order the truck without the front console, so there must be some way to get a crew cab that doesn't have those ducts in there. Can it be ordered with the center console?

I'm not interested in cooled seats. I actually want cloth seats, so I can add the heaters myself later.

The problem is, I tend to order a truck so I get exactly what I want instead of buying off the lot. That means I'd be looking at a 17 model now. From everything I can tell, the 08 console isn't the same size as the console in the 17 model.

I have considered ordering a split bench up front and then trying to switch an 08-16 front seats and console into it. Guess it all depends on weather the new seats are comfortable enough or if they are thin on padding like the latest trend seems to point toward.

That of course would open up a whole new line of questions if I decided to go with power seats, etc.

If you're looking at a 2017, shouldn't you be looking at the F150 forums to see what their interior is like? Since the '17 shares the cab with the 150?

Good point, but if it turns out I don't like the 17 then I'll be looking for a deal on a 16 somewhere. Just want to cover all the bases. I still prefer to order what I want, but I also prefer a stick shift so I'm already going to have to make compromises or start driving a Dodge.

Are you gonna hit 600k before you pull the trigger on a new superduty?

A lot depends on what my knee does. I stepped wrong a week or so ago and it's been a problem ever since. It's been bad for decades, but I've had to wear a brace for the last week.

If I end up needing surgery, the clutch won't be an option for me.
