Went on vacation this weekend and am 4 hours away from home. On the trip I started having problems. I recently started having an issue with higher egts than normal. I currently have a gt38r ball bearing turbo, ts six position chip with cold air intake. Also have international up pipes. Out of no where I started getting higher egts than normal. Boost seems to be there like normal for the most part. Any ideas? No exhaust leaks at manifolds or anything like that. I also don't hear a boost leak anywhere and like I said the boost seems to be pretty normal. Maybe a little lower than normal but egts are going up way to quick. I don't hear anything that resembles a boost leak. Boost does not come on until after 1500 rpms. Can a bad map sensor cause these problems? Not sure where to look next. Don't want to just throw parts at this truck. There is also no black smoke when the egts go up that quick. Fresh oil and new fuel filter have just been done.
Even a small boost or exhaust leak can cause EGT's to spike rather quickly. Just because you can't hear a boost leak doesn't mean it's not there. The fact that you are observing boost close to normal, but still enough to notice that it's slightly less than your usual boost is enough to convince me that there's a leak somewhere.
If a visual inspection doesn't yield a result, then you would have to construct a leak detector. Basically something to put on the intake of the turbo and pump air into the system to check for leaks.
I had this happen on my old truck years ago, EGT's hot suddenly, boost close to normal but maybe down just a bit. All the boots looked fine and couldn't find a leak. Built a leak detector and found the passenger's side intake plenum was leaking and had pulled away from the head slightly. Threw on new plenums with lots of RTV sealant and everything returned back to normal.
