Chip, new injectors, or just a refresh?
Anyways, I'm wanting to know what I should do as a good next step for power AND efficiency (as in MPG wise.) I'm not going to be big on towing if that makes a difference in what I do. I'm thinking between getting a chip OR seeing if I can afford stage 1 injectors (might not be able to spend the coin on that now.) I currently have the 6637 air filter, a 3" downpipe to a 3.5" straightpipe, and a 120V IDM (since my last one failed me!) Otherwise, everything else is stock.
I've read so much that a proper chip is a night and day difference to a programmer (like the superchips 1705 that came with the truck.) The thing is I know nothing about what ones to get, how to install them, how/where to get custom tuning on them, and how much a difference it really will make compared to the generic 1705.
I've also considered getting stage 1 injectors because I'm thinking the ones I have now are getting close to needing some attention with 186k on them. The P/O said that two were running a little weaker, but still within specs. I believe rebuilding stock injectors costs as much as stage 1s, so I might as well upgrade if it's something I need to do.
What do you guys think the next step I should take is? A good chip, or injectors?
If a chip:
What brand chip should I get?
Are custom tunes available to get sent with the chip, or are the stock tunes on chips like the t5 good enough?
How much should I expect to spend on a good setup?
If injectors:
Will stage 1s come with everything I need to install them, or do I need to buy other things (like o-rings etc.)?
Can my stock injectors be refreshed for less than going with stage 1s if my injectors really are starting to get weak?
Will there be any downsides to running with different injectors and NOT tuning for them immediately (because I don't think I can afford injectors and a custom chip right away)?
I think a chip would be an easy and good thing to do, and also a bit less expensive. However, I keep thinking about the condition of my injectors. I haven't driven another powerstroke before so I don't know what to expect. I don't seem to have any issues, but I'm thinking I could gain lost power and MPG if my injectors are rebuilt. However, if rebuilding my injectors costs close to getting stage 1s, then that seems like the obvious chose to make.
If two injectors really are weaker, I suppose I could replace just those two, but that seems a little cheap to me and I'd think the others would start to show wear soon as well.
Anyways opinions and advice is greatly appreciated! I won't be bummed if I don't do either option as well since driving my truck now is great! I just want to make sure I can get the most out of my setup I have now!
How much boost you making?
if that's not up to snuff then chip or injectors wont help at all.
I am in similar situation. I can hear one injector on each side knocking loudly. Need to get me some gauges to test pressures and go from there.
Mt HPOP is new and the LPOP is a melling one that seemed fairly new. I'd think my HPOP pressure would be good then unless something is wrong with the injector o-rings right?
As for fuel pressure, I'd have to check that as well. The pump is not new, but I clear and resealed my fuel bowl and replaced the fuel rail o-rings. So unless the pump is going bad, I'd think my pressure should be okay.
