The old Skool 300 cu-in 6
Howdy guys,
A couple of our members have installed the 300 in older trucks and I also even considered using one in my 55 F-600! It was my second choice after the 292 Y-block.......
The 300 is a great engine and it allows you to use much more modern transmissions like the ZF 5-speed, AOD/AODE , E4OD and others without needing an adapter.
I did a little searching around and found a couple of videos from PowerNationTV that were a lot of fun to watch.

Yes, the guys over at the six cylinder part of this forum were pretty excited when those episodes aired. It's nice to see the old workhorse engines getting the spotlight. I currently have one in my 53 f250 daily driver. Future plans are to build a turbo engine for it so I can upset the many cummins fanboys I know. Duramax trucks won't be safe either lol

The 240/300's are my favorite engines. So it was great to see a 300 finally given some attention on one of the TV shows.
I think the only other 240/300 I've seen on any of the shows was on fast & loud when they pulled a 240/300 out of a 67-72 truck hauled it out to their parking lot with a fork lift, raised the forks all the way and then one of the guys kicked it off the forks and into there scrap dumpster!
My only issue with the Engine Power's build is it didn't seem like they were trying very hard to make power. They didn't do any port work on the head, they installed pistons that were shorter then the stock ones. It's like they just called up Summit Racing and said send us what you've got for a 300 and we'll throw one together.

Besides my 54 project I believe I've seen 3 or 4 other FTE members with 53-56's with 300's and 1 or 2 48-52's. They are a great engine for these trucks. And they can be built to do just about anything. From all out drag trucks to a daily driver/work truck. And it's not something you'll see under every hood at a car show/cruise, etc.

The only member I know with a stroked 300 is "Col Flashman". He has a 58 Mercury M-100 with a 300 that is bored & stroked to a 312 c.i. I don't think 350 cubes is possible on the 300.
Besides my 54 project I believe I've seen 3 or 4 other FTE members with 53-56's with 300's and 1 or 2 48-52's. They are a great engine for these trucks. And they can be built to do just about anything. From all out drag trucks to a daily driver/work truck. And it's not something you'll see under every hood at a car show/cruise, etc.

Stroked V-8's get considerably more displacement. 350 to 383, 454 to 496
Sure seems like you should get more than only 12 cu-in stroking a 300!!

I've got a standard 240 in my '65 that just runs and runs and is fun to drive with no go-fast modifications. I have always thought about hopping it up though...maybe one day when the '56 is more than garage art.

The V8 strokers mostly use an aftermarket crank. That's not available on the 300's. To stroke a 300 you are pretty much stuck with offset grinding the cranks. So you are limited there. And I'm not positive, but I seem to remember there might be an issue with cam/crank clearance with much more stroke.
That's probably why you don't see more stroked 300's. For the money, there are a lot more gains to be had by adding a turbo or supercharger.
But my 54 project is on hold until I get 300 powered 80's E350 work van finished.

And if you think that's cool. The 300 was also available in the big N-series Ford trucks too. I don't know a whole lot about them. But I have seen a few with 300's while out looking at junk yards. Sadly I didn't have the cash to buy the engines then.
They do have a kind of cool look to them. This is just a pic I got off google.
A 300 that is built to handle some boost would be a great engine for a big truck.
