Shut off after starting - now it won't start
I'm beginning to wonder if I should switch back to a gasser.....
My 01 4x4 F350CCD was having this "issue" where, after leaving it plugged in all night, I would start it up with no problems but then after idling for maybe 15-30 seconds it would just fade out and shut off. The first few times I would hit the key again and it would crank for an extended period but then refire and it would idle normally. Eventually I learned that if I held the idle up at around 1000 I could see the rpm drop slightly after starting but it wouldn't shut off.
About a week ago I started the truck and wasn't paying attention and didn't hold the throttle open and the truck shut off. This time after cranking it (probably way to much) it wouldn't start at all. I changed the fuel filter but that did nothing. I also notice that the tach does move to around 500 or so when cranking. I have not changed the CPS but a new one had been installed in May 2015. The engine is cranking but there is no white smoke or even attempt to fire.
Anybody out there have any similar experiences or suggestions??

There are a gajillion links in my signature - the last one is good for no-starts, and the OBDII link will provide support for everything in there.
This could be expired injectors or bad O-rings. How many miles?

Thanks to everyone who replied! Since I always hate to read a thread and never know how something got resolved I thought I'd put up here what has transpired.
After initially ignoring the HPOP assuming that it couldn't be that (had that problem with my 95) I decided to check the oil reservoir and.....EMPTY. Filled it up, cranked it a few times and it coughed to life. Ran it a bit then shut it off and checked the crankcase oil and found it low and filled it up and now it's starting like it should. As long as it's plugged in - but that's another issue.
My enlightened observation is that the HPOP is filled from the crankcase but when it's running low on oil it doesn't fill it enough and once it gets to low it doesn't fill it at all. If someone out there that actually knows something could verify that theory I'd appreciate it.

3 or 4 depending on how much was the jug to begin with. It seems that by topping everything off I've also eliminated the tendency for the idle to die about 15 seconds after start up. It may be coincidence though.
My guess is the hpop is kind of the end of the line for staying full when low on oil. It had enough to fire the injectors initially but needed time for the reservoir to be filled. As long as I held the idle up I was basically pushing it past the point it was full enough to operate as it should. By letting it shut off before it was full it didn't have enough to fire it again. I'm probably 180 degrees out of line but at least I'm up and running....for now.
