Hey everyone... it's been a while but thats because the truck has been performing well.
Current problem: The truck has been hard to start this year as if the glow plugs are not working or are bad. It will start right up if I use the block heater.
Just recently, I also noticed that the EBPV is not coming on when warming up the truck.
Also, This winter season, the engine temp is not coming up to normal. the engine temp needle is more on the low side towards the C and definitely less than 1/2 way up where is normally is. When driving on the highway, the temp comes up more. but sitting at idle it barely gets warm.
So not sure if all 3 are related or not, but looking for a starting point.
I would check your thermostat. If its stuck open it will take a real long time to warm up, and warm at idle is when it usually closes to keep temps, then it will open as it warms driving. So I'm guessing its just toast and luckily stuck open so you didn't over heat. EBPV is a simple system, but a few things can be wrong. Mines gone but I remember it never came on right away. I think the emergency brake had to be on, and if I touched anything driving related, it would shut off. Plug on the bottom of pedestal could be loose, broken etc. The actuator arm could have come off. Could be leaking and not hold. There is a simple rebuild kit for the whole system. Not completely sure, but the oil temp or coolant temp, not sure which it uses, I would guess oil temp, could have a bad sensor so it doesn't read to turn on. Usually throws a code if the electrical side malfunctions or the actuator doesn't move. Worst case I can think of is it is working but the butterfly broke off the actuator and is stuck open. Kinda unlikely. I'd look for oil leaking out by the actuator off the pedestal, if its still hooked up, plugged in. Curious if the rpm still picks up, but the ebpv doesn't work? Indicating you have a mechanical issue and not electrical. Read for codes??
If you can catch it, very little assuming you can re-use what you catch. Also, if this is the original thermostat, the new ones have the rubber o-ring/gasket around the thermostat. The old/original ones t-stats had a rubber 0-ring actually sit on top of the thermostat.
And, if your luck is like mine, the 2 that I changed, the housing started leaking right away. Buy a new housing when you get the thermostat.
Could the ebpv problem be related to the lower engine temp?
Don't really see how, unless it sits and idles a lot. Driving, it will get to operating temp without the EBPV, though it will take it a while at 10 or 15 degrees. Now, on a cold day, and sitting at idle, my 97 (previous work truck) would get cold enough at idle, after warm up, to activate the EBPV. It had to be near single digits to get that to happen though, along with a windy day.

Does the heater blow hot air? Or is it luke warm?
Heater blows warm, not hot. Plus if I turn the cabin heat off the engine temp is warmer. Obviously...
