Okay not exactly perfect but after catching a kid at a local Walmart lot opening up the guys brand new Chevy Duramax and playing with the fuel door it got me to thinking the kid ran off but I waited till the driver came out too tell him what happened he had a tow truck come get the vehicle and couldn't thank me enough for letting him know. The idea of touching anyone's property just to vandalize it sends my blood boiling I'd wish I could have caught that kid just too old to catch him anyhow this came to be today, at least if someone plays with your vehicles highly vulnerable fuel system and after exhaust treatment you'll be able to tell by the pried or tampered with door vandalism now will be covered under insurance. going to buy the API version lockable fuel door and put that on this summer but for now this is secure I find it hard to believe Ford doesn't offer a locking fuel or exhaust fluid cap when it's so crucial and the damage that can be done buy some lowlife or stupid kid
Stant makes a locking green fuel cap for out trucks. I have had one on mine for well over a year and half. The Stant catalog apparently hasn't been updated but the one they list for 2011-2012 and others fits our trucks.
I rather have locking fuel cap than door. Granted any of them can be defeated. I think the locking fuel door is a waste of time to do it since the door is flimsy. The DEF can be drained and refilled if you get a Code for it. The DEF doesn't cost BIG money to repair or replace compared to the fuel system of approx $9000.

You know another good point is I rather have one key to open everything then try to keep track of two keys either way it's better than nothing until I get my locking door from ami. here put a rubber gasket under it looks more official lol
I did the same thing on my F350 but used a barrel keyed lock. Like you I understand that the fuel door could still be pried open. And like you I would notice the damage of someone having done so and could then take the appropriate action to investigate further.
Truth is any keyed lock can be defeated as they are only designed to keep out honest people.
I was going to go to that same position but the lip past the finger grab is very minimal large plastic shield in the way don't know if it was the same on his truck where I went even though it doesn't look right you will bend the fender off to get that door open grabbing a large part of the structure up there you'll definitely know someone touched it although his does look OME here is what my looks like and the lock set if for mailbox out side weatherproof with seals lol i sure it will freeze over time my old trucks gas locking cape froze all the time too nature of the beast ,the world we live in today and yes i know they can open it but i will know and that's what maters

How about using one of the locks from the locking under seat compartments?
jonrjen, can you show an image of it opened. Where does it latch to?
I wrapped the metal back piece with electrical tape to protect the paint finish where the lock tongue may have movement or vibration.
I picked the location I did because from an atheistic point of view it blended well and has a balanced look. I had though of moving it more upward and into the corner for a deeper pocket location for the latch to bury within. But then also realized that this would allow someone to still gain easier access due to the fuel door having the ability to flex and bend with little strength from the bad buy.
Either way, the lock is only as strong as the intentions of the desire of the bad guy to gain entry.
