I have a 07 f250 with 115k on it and I've owned it since it had 45k, bought it 5yrs ago, question is should I replace the alternator and belt and if I do, should I put a higher amp one in, haven't load tested yet, just wondering if I should being it's going on almost 10yrs, with original
Is there an issue with the alternator? Have a live data monitoring device to tell if it's not working?
If it's working correctly, then don't waste your money. If your looking to upgrade, the 2007 has a 140amp already, a step up from the 2003/4 units that came standard with 110amp units. I'm running a Neece-Leville 230, some are running DC Power 185-320amp units.
The big ticket is to monitor the performance of the truck, take action early to diagnose and repair prior to failure. Having the batteries and alternator checked is a good idea. If you wait until failure occurs, FICM' don't like power shortages for inputs.. it will kill it in short order.
Using a 58mm pulley to increase the RPM at idle won't hurt either. Lots of guys running stock alternators without issues.
No problems I'm running around 13.4 to 13.9, 2 new batteries and those voltage readings are about .5v below because when I put my voltmeter on batteries I'm at 14.0 to 14.4, so that answered that question, but should I at least replace the belt that has 115k on it
I agree with Randy. Belts today go for a long time and I know of a few trucks that have 200k belts. For me though, the belt is one of the items on vehicles I change at the 100k mile point just as preventative.
The alt with the black ring is usually the 110 unit, they upped it for the 05' to 140. I'd have to look at the 140 I have as a spare and see if it has the black ring on it to be sure. Maybe someone else can answer as I'm in Spain right now for work.
I'm pretty certain our '07 with the standard packages came with a 110A, whatever it was it died around 60k. I had a 140A with the plow package in my '07, that one died around 90k.
Edit: Source book says 6.0 came with a 115A unit, except snow plow packages came with 140A unit:
My 05 came witha 110 on it. It died while I was out of town and my father i law put a110 back on it. If I'd have know, I would've put a 140 on it. Now I'm just waiting for it to show me some signs of weakening so I'll have a excuse.
I think I'm take mine to my mech tomorrow and have him load test for me, just to make sure cause if it's even slightly starting to go I'm gonna replace, cause I was looking on ficm repair, and I would do the whole upgrade wires and all, when it's time but gonna have mech load test anyway
My 2005 has a 140 amp unit, it was an upgrade an I know this as I have the build sheet window sticker from when I bought it. That being said the 2007 might be stock 140. I too swapped out the 140 for a Leece Neville 230 amp unit in my signature.
In addition to the belt consider replacing the tensioner as well.
