Anyone familiar with the optional heavy-duty 6-bladed fan offered in 1949 for the flat 8? Was digging around in some of the old parts for Gertie, and ran across the fan that was on the truck when we got the thing in '69 or so. I replaced the fan in 1990 when I rebuilt the engine, thinking it was some after-market part. Thing is, when I looked at the fan recently, it has Ford stamped on it, and the hub, mounting, etc., is just like the four blade now on the truck.
Anyone have one? Another reason I took it off, is that it roars to beat the band.
My '47 COE had a 6 blade fan and the original V8 for my F4 has one also. They are noisier than the 4 blade fan, but they do cool better, especially if you don't have the fan shroud.
I think they were a truck/heavy duty option....
I had one on my truck too for a while. It was noisy alright, but I removed it because it was out of balance and vibrated.
The 4 blade on there is still louder than I like, but cools fine with the shroud.
I am running what I believe is the stock 6 x fan (non script). Mine doesn't seem to noisy but I do not have a reference point for the noise level. I can attest to it moving a lot of air with the shroud. Our F1 radiators are huge and there is no reason that the 4x shouldn't do a fine job on a light truck. I would have used a 4x but could not find one when I built the motor.
Yup, mine looks just like your guys. Can't tell on yours Stu, but the blades on mine are aluminum. When Dad got the truck, it had that 6-bladed fan, and the optional fuel pump/vacuum booster. I got a spec. sheet somewhere in my files that list an optional vacuum booster, and I assume that is the one I have. It certainly isn't the same as the one on the "E" series 337 engine.
I would think that if the truck came from the factory with the heavy-duty fan, it would also have the heavy-duty radiator. I am at a loss as to how to tell though. Given the truck only had around 42K miles when Dad got it, it is interesting to conjecture as to whether the fan was a factory installed option. It has other options, such as the 3-spd. heavy duty synchro. tranny, and the "Magic-Air" heater.
Mine are steel. Wonder why both aluminum and steel. Stu
Could be the year produced. It seems that I read somewhere about Ford bouncing back and forth between aluminum and steel on various parts. An example is the headlight buckets for the '48-'50 monkey faces. Some had steel, others like mine, were of aluminum.
