Need recommendations for a reputable motor shop that specializes in flathead motors in North Central Illinois or surrounding area. Want someone to thoroughly go through my 39' flatty and add some h.p. to around 125+.
If the flathead is a stock 85 HP 221 inch motor you will spend a lot of money to get an honest 125 horsepower. If you have a 100 horse 239 inch motor you will have an easier time, but still spend some money. I think an honest 90-100 horsepower is plenty peppy in an otherwise stock 39 pickup. Heck I have a friend with a stock 37 half ton stakebed with a Columbia overdrive and 221 inch motor. He drives that truck all over the place with no problem.
My friend has been building these for along time. And ships all over. But he is in Utah though.
Right now he is downsizing and liquidating alot of cores and built ready to go engines. This is his storage shed that has to be empty in less than a year.
Thanks for the info jmadsen. I'm really wanting to find someone somewhat local though. I say I would like 125+ h.p., but in reality I would be happy with a true 100h.p. motor. I tend to exaggerate my expectations 20% to come in line with the exaggerated numbers most engine builders say a motor will make.
There a guy called schwams in lancaster PA does nothing but flatheads, he's about 10 mins from my house, he goes to Hershey if you venture there for the fall swap meet
