On my 239, I want to eliminate the oil bath air filter and replace with a direct fit air filter...any suggestions on air cleaners that will fit properly?
I think 52 Merc did a mod to an old oil bath unit. Used a Fram filter in it. Check out his thread. Pretty good stuff there. Haven't quite figured out how to post links yet but you can use the search function to find it.
Yes, that post about the mod is great, I just followed it and the results are outstanding. It does take a while to cut with a hacksaw but really is the best way.
If you look at your carb's air horn, you'll see it has a wedge-shape for the V-clamp on the air cleaner. No aftermarket air cleaners are going to fit securely to that, although some of the small dome-shaped ones with set-screws might stay on acceptably well. Wayne's mod is the best bet.
Since I've had it, my truck has always had an 8BA car carburetor on it. The car carburetor doesn't have the wedge on the airhorn. At the time, you could buy a Balkamp adapter from NAPA that clamped on and provided a center stud for a standard air cleaner with a wing-nut. I used an air cleaner from a 283 Chevy (for Rochester 2GC) on mine. - Bob

283 Chevy air cleaner
Is that a 12v motorcycle battery mounted on the firewall?
Close! It's a 6V. The wires and fuses behind the air cleaner lead to a DPDT switch under the dash that allows me to power a 12V negative ground radio, or charge the battery if I don't want to play the radio. This also required converting the truck to negative ground. - Bob
I've modified a few of the original oil bath. First one I did using a K & N filter but was too pricey ($55). Found a Napa gold element for $10 that works well.
