Delete or Warranty

I've got a 2013 with 22k miles; 3yr warranty on the engine will expire in May of 2016. I can buy a Flood Ford ESP for about $2400 which would cover everything except the emissions items to 100k or 4 more years *or* I can delete the DPF for around $3k. The delete would void the warranty but I would have a free-breathing truck.

I'm mitary stationed in Alaska (no emissions tests). I'll move who knows where in 2017; if I move to CA, MD, etc. I'd have to have the DPF reinstalled. I pull a travel trailer (8k lbs) and don't hot rod my truck. I have a very short daily commute (2mi each way).

Thoughts on which course of action and why? Thanks in advance for your input....

I voted delete. It seems as though a good majority of the issues down the road are related to emissions caused events. You have enough miles on your truck now to have gotten past the "bugs" that could have popped up in a new vehicle. My plan is to do the same very soon with the same reasoning in mind.

My opinion, with the way you use the truck and the reason you have it, makes the decision very difficult. If you used it for work and drove it a lot of miles I would be firmly in the warranty camp. But light use and minimal towing makes it easier to go the delete route.

I think it's so unlikely that you'll wear anything out as long as you own the truck, the decision comes down to just whatever makes you happy. Won't find a concrete justification either way, purely emotional decision.

The engine is warrantied for 5/100k years not three. Three is just the standard bumper to bumper. The rest of the powertrain is 5/60k.

That said, in most cases, I'd delete. However, not knowing where you'll be stationed is a big "IF." Here in MA they do both a physical and computer test. Spartan has a tune that will get the OBD2 part done but you have to have a lazy or friendly inspector to miss your DPF missing when they poke their head under their truck. So, your question is a tough one indeed just because of the location uncertainty.

As Karl said, the engine has a much longer warranty. I'd leave well enough alone until that time passed. I've got 21k on mine and feel that any issues that will arise will do so between the 50-100k mark.

I truly believe these trucks are reliable enough to not really worry about the warranty. Just my .02. Fuel system issues seem to be denied more than warrantied. If the turbo craps the bed, I see it as an opportunity to put a '15 charger on it. Those are the only two things that I could see coming up under warranty. I say delete it and be happy with a "worry free" truck. As to the price to delete the truck. You can do it for 1/2 that price.

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned the 2 mi (current) commute. My sig pretty much sums up my perspective on whether or not to delete the truck. I've got over 50k miles on mine since deleting it at 30k miles. As mentioned, you can delete for less than $3k. What concerns me more is the 2 mile commute. That's just hard on an diesel engine. It doesn't get brought up to temps and ever really get warmed up deleted or not. Before you do anything, I'd buy a beater car just to make that commute and then dump it when it's time to move. Don't put any diesel through that commute would be my vote.

P.S. I have had warranty work done on my truck since deleting. Depends on a lot of factors, but the title is misleading. You don't walk away from your warranty completely when deleting. If the service writer tells you that, find another dealer.

Good point on the short communte Andre - I missed that!
Not being able to come up to full operating temperature is a recipe for trouble on any engine...

Delete it

The only reason not to delete is yearly smog check. If you can deal with that delete it. Really is the better option.

Also Keep your old exhaust. You will need it later.

On the two mile commute ride a bike, get a power scooter. It not good for any diesel to make that trip.

Good point on keeping any components deleted... Most dealers will not take an emissions altered vehicle in trade...

I opted and voted for warranty. For me I am not into too much mods except for minor appearance. I like my truck stock, mitigates hassles on warranty, dealer issues or resell. Plus I bought close to 100k, so my situation was different. For you, like others have said it depends on your needs / wants. Uncertainty of moving? How long are you planning to keep your truck? Warranty stuff (maybe consider delete after the 5y/100k warranty is out). And how deep your pockets are: if you delete and an unwarranted issue comes up. There's also the issue of warranty and then the deny. Really life's a crap shoot all the time.

Then there's the 2 mile commute thing Savage pointed out....I don't like trips where oil doesn't at least get over say 170F.

I voted warranty. Don't need to repeat what's already been said except that I like clean air and I want my niece and nephew and their kids to have clean air. Particulate matter does bad things.
