I'm almost (1600 miles to go) home from my 8000 miles or so summer trip. More on that after I get home. Right now I'm curious about something that happened twice in the last two days.
Towing down steep grades in tow haul, truck downshifted and RPM went up but I don't think it passed 4000 and it didn't seem any higher RPM than many other downshifts. But, wrench lit up and truck threw an over rev code. Any comments?
I had a 2012 that I would have to take out of tow mode when going down hills pulling the backhoe. It wanted to rev high for braking. Very high, and didn't want to shift even when leveled off. Now I learned that you can just use the gear selector to go up a gear.
I know y'all think I'm crazy but I hate the way the trans shifts with a passion in auto/tow haul. Any time I'm towing I use M and with the exhaust brake turned on I've never had an issue controlling speed coming down grades. The shift points are 1000 rpm too high all across the range for me. My truck does see 3000-3500 rpm rolling down grades with me controlling the gears, but I will never rely on the auto mode to do it for me so I will never experience what you're trying to understand.

You might want to have your dealership look things over, StanleyZ; since you're traveling, you can locate a dealership near where you are now by entering the current ZIP code here: Ford Dealers | Locate a Ford Dealer Near You | Ford.com What's the current mileage on your truck?
I've never had the over rev code thrown but the cruse control does have some programming that causes it to make a dumb decision at times when pushed by weight. For some reason I can see Ford warranty pushing back if there was ever a mechanical concern related to this code when in fact it was the TCM that caused it in the first place.
I too use manual mode. I start the downshifting earlier and can keep the RPM's in check. We know these trucks are programmed to take care of most of the important hardware but it shouldn't be throwing an over rev either. I suppose what is missing is intelligence. We see the grade and begin to make the correct decisions in advanced vs the truck makes the decision once it determines pitch and push from the trailer. That's at least my interpretation.
Thanks all. I'll try the M but the only down grade left is Mounteagle TN. Last time I went over that I blew the HG on my 6.4L, man was that pricey. as to the current problem, I was not on cruise and in both cases the downshifts surprised me as I didn't feel they were needed. The other thing I noticed is the failure to downshift going up steep grades under load. Truck just didn't want to do it even with my foot through the floor boards.
Krystal, I'll get it checked when I get home. Went to Ford dealer in Nevada for an oil change. The next time I checked oil it was way high, like two quarts. You can't buy anything but bio in a lot of states and that's what I had been using so I figured I was "making" oil like my 6.4L did. Then I looked at paper work and saw that they charged me for 14 quarts of oil which I believe is one to many. Got about a quart and a half sucked out and all was well. Problem is I gave them a very high grade on the survey because they got it done fast as I had requested. Next time I'll tell them to take their time. lol
At this point any dealer adding more than 13 quarts is simply cheating the owner. It was a problem in the beginning since everyone was used to 15 quarts but the 6.7L has been receiving dealer oil changes since early 2010 so there isn't an excuse anymore.
The lack of a downshift is interesting if you were in the upper gears. If I push mine to the floor, it'll downshift to third quickly. I spend so much time in manual mode, I can use a higher gear and push it to the floor so sometimes I forget I'm in auto and do that which is quite surprising when it downshifts and takes off.
I haven't had any issues towing 16,500 pounds. However, I have the new exhaust brake that came out in 2015 and it makes quite a difference coming down hills. I had a 2011 6.7, so I know what it was like without the exhaust brake. Also, when towing and going up a grade, I don't have to "kick" it down to downshift. In fact, if I'm going uphill and losing speed, I can slowly push down on the accelerator and it will downshift.
