Blinking O/D and no turn signals
Hi,
I am new here and can not seem to find the answer to my issue.
I just bought (from a private sale) a 1998 Ford Expedition XLT 4.6 L V8, 4x4. Upon driving it home the turn signals stopped working as well as the hazards, and the O/D light started to blink, thereafter the check engine light came on.
Autozone read the code, which came up with P1740.
Autozone said with that code it could be the TCC Solenoid or short circuit. Yet, Autozone did not know what TCC stands for.
However, good ol' google resulted in mix advice.
1) some saying it is the TCC solenoid.
2) others say to remove the steering wheel cover, because the gear shift wires may need to be re-sottered, as they can become loose inside the bracket.
3) One even said it is the #24 fuse
4) One said to check #23 fuse
What would be the best bet in fixing the blinking O/D light?
How hard is it to replace the TCC solenoid?
I need to get this fixed, as I will be towing a cargo trailer this month in my move across country. So any help will be appreciated.

TCC = Torque Converter Clutch. It may be the TCC solenoid that is damaged, or the wiring to it. And it's located in the transmission, which requires you to remove the oil pan to access it. Buy yourself a shop manual, it'll be of great help when taking care of an old vehicle.

Reading your issue, I suggest you start with checking fuses. I don't have any diagram infront of me, so have no idea if the transmission and blinkers have any common fuse, but since these two issues appeared at the same time, it may be an electrical fault or blown fuse that causes both issues.

There is no fuse in common between the turn signals, the emergency flashers, and the transmission.
Fuse identification must come from the owner's manual, consult it.
Yeah, that's not looking good or inexpensive.

Autozone can only read codes that turn on the Check Engine light. Codes that make the OD OFF light flash are inaccessible to the cheap reader that Autozone uses. There may be more codes that could help diagnose the problem.
The best way to do it is to get the codes read at a place that really can read codes and go from that list. A good independent shop or a Ford dealer can read the codes. Auto parts stores cannot.

Common problem...remove the upper shroud off the steering column. You'll likely find the retainers for the electrical connectors for the turn signal switch have broken off. When that happens, tilting the wheel down tugs on the wires and eventually pulls the connector out far enough for the switch to stop working.
