Hey yall, I have been cruising these threads for a few months now, and have wanted a diesel Excursion for a long time. Having said this, I have narrowed it down to a couple, and one in particular: 2002 EB, 4x4, 148k mi., current owner says it has "been chipped" prior to him owning it for whatever that worth (said it was previously owned by Jesse James) has a 6in lift on 35's which he says was done by previous owner. It has a new tranny, H20 pump, alt, and a lot of the moving parts.
As for what to look for when I go drive/inspect it, I know flip the oil cap over and look for blow-by, and some other odds and ends. I do have access to a Super Chips Micro Tuner 1705 to scan for codes. Anything else I should look for? Is there anyway to know what kind of "chip" has been installed? Any any other advice when looking it over? I am tempted to bring it to a diesel shop and pay the 100$ to give it a once over!
That's a good year with not many miles... I'd get a CarFax or similar, and have that check-over you mentioned. Maybe pull the air cleaner, look down the boot; if there's much dust, pull the boot at the turbo and look at the wheel.
Get any or all paperwork that the work claimed was actually done- was the trans just serviced, or rebuilt, or NEW trans installed.
Test drive with tire pressures checked@ 55lbs, to even the field on the test drives that you do. (They'll feel squirrely if the pressures have been upped to 70 lbs or so.)

Copy that! He specifically said it was a new tranny because I asked the same thing. The owner really does not want to get rid of it ( and I can tell) but his wife is making him.... has a few quirks, CD player does not work but radio does, the passenger side door lock does not work, also a few rips on the leather which is to be expected, but all minor things. Hope to look at it when he gets back from vacation next week, I am just doing research between now and then to have my ducks in a row when I get there, thanks!
Yeah, I can definitely take some pics, is that for y'all viewing pleasure, or possibly you might see something under the hood that does not look right? I do have two I saved to my phone before he took the ad down, I will try to upload. I will look for the obvious stuff, and have a shop check it fir the less obvious stuff. Question, whats the probability I find a rig that I dont have to dump a bunch of money into right off the bat...?
both really some time visually we can catch things the person looking at the truck may not notice (especially if its a first truck or something like that)
