Hey Moto, grab a scrap piece of your favorite color carpet and cut it to fit the 2nd row floor. Mine's lasted 15 years, still protecting that virgin Ex carpet.
I've got Husky in the Ex, Weather Tech in the MB. In terms of surface protection they are about the same. The Weathertech looks better because it is a soft material. The Husky works far better for spills and mud due to the high hard sides. They look like something you would find in a work truck but then again they work like something you would find in a work truck. Or a vehicle with children.
Weather Tech has some universal fit mats that work in the 2nd and 3rd row. You have to modify them a little, but they provide grooves that you cut along with some scissors and it turns out quite nice.
I am not a big fan of either brands "molded" floor mats. They are very similar to the cargo liner you don't like. I forget what the ones I got are called, but they are nice and soft, but as mentioned don't hold 5 gallons of water (or trip you up on a lip when you're getting in/out of the vehicle). Here's the only pic I have that shows my floor mats. The rears are pushed forward in it for some reason, but you can see them. You can cut along those grooves at the front to make the universal fits smaller. I had to make several cuts to clear seat mounts and such.
