Help the Noob!

I have a 1999 Ranger 4x4 4.0 5 speed step side...in Jalapeno no less. Anyway, for the past 5 years or so the check engine light has been on. When it came on I did nothing because nothing seemed to change and I was too broke to fix it anyway. Well, just lately the check engine light has started to flicker or go out completely. When this happens the truck seems sluggish and the A/C will stop working. As long as the check engine light is ON the truck runs like it always has, when it goes off the issues start. If I am stopped with the clutch depressed the idle will drop down to 500 rpms or so.

Kinda hoping it is something I can fix or at least learn about so I can have an intelligent conversation with a mechanic. Any ideas?

dont know where you are (inside/outside the US), but we cant do anything to help you without the codes that it has. autozone, advance, etc will all do a basic scan for free. Or if you can borrow or buy a reader. Welcome aboard, hopefully we can help.

Thanks. I should have already done what you suggested I guess. Plenty of AutoZone stores here...headquarters is nearby.

The codes it read were

PO141 HO2S-12
PO135 HO2S-11
PO155 HO2S-21

Again, the weird part, at least to me is that the truck runs the way it always has with the check engine light ON but when the light goes off or flickers the issues start.

Thanks for your help.

My first thought would be to replace the o2 sensors. If it was one, it could be a wiring fault. But all three seems like the place to start. How old are they?

I donno... It's a 99 model so I would say at least 16 years. I am guessing that is a bit too old. How hard are they to replace? I work on old two stroke outboards as a hobby (21 in the garage right now) but I am not the smartest spoon in the box of crackers.

as long as you get an o2 sensor socket, not too hard. The right and left front ones take a bit of inginuity as there is not a lot of room..but its not a complicated process. Unplug, unscrew, screw in new one, plug back in.

O2 sensors are not "lifetime parts" they are wear parts and need to be considered like a belts or tires.

Of course you will have to pay shipping, but rock auto prices on them are half the price of the local parts stores.
