During a extremly wet commute in heavy rain I had the check engine light come on then go off.Now every time I start driving in my 1990 2.3l ford ranger the check engine light comes on about 1 to 2 k.m. into my drive and stays on untill I turn the ignition off.I took the truck into the garage to get the codes pulled. The codes that came up were nonsense codes related to things like automatic transmisions(my truck is a standard). The mechanic spent a hour and half trying to diagnose the problem and finally gave up(I wasn't charged). The vehicle has no change in driveability when the light comes on and has been running as well as it ever has in the 251,000 km I have driven it.
What I would like to know is what sort of tests/checks should I do before I start throwing money at the problem?
I might try a different shop.
Its hard to believe (for me anyway) that you could get codes that arent even right for your truck. If its the origional ECM Maybe its bad...
I would at least re- check the codes, and then clear them and see if they come back.
Welcome to FTE.
Disconnect the battery for 1/2 hour and let the computer re-learn everything.Sounds like water has been responsible for some funny stuff when mixed with computers.
Spray all the electrical connectors to the various sensors with an electrical cleaning fluid. Sounds like water got into one or more. Reset the computer and see what happens.
