Well I have a 70 f-100 ranger, bought it back in 03 for $600.
I believe it has the original 302 and 3-speed light duty. Of course someone put the shifter in the floor. Not the original rear end. VIN says it came with 3.25,but tag on housing says it's a 3.70. It's shot. I can drive, but it roars very loudly. It has an electrical issue somewhere in the wiring harness. When I turn on the headlights, I have one on dim, both on bright. But shortly after putting them on bright, they begin to flash off and on. It's only the headlights though. I'd eventually like to just re-wire the whole truck but don't have extra $ for restoring right now. It's an old classic with the tool stowage box built into the passenger side of the bed. Not for sale. Anyways I found this forum and thought I'd join. I also have a 94 ranger I'm having some issues with and joined another forum for it. Any suggestions? Comments?
9in rears are pretty simple to swap should be able to do it in the $150.00 range including fluid. Put your location in your profile and maybe in a post. Someone near you might have something.
The wiring issue could have more than one front but will lean to dirty contacks, at the bulb connection, rust at the dimmer, dust at the light switch. After 50 years stuff breaks down.
The head light problems sound like the bad or weak contacts mentioned above. Swap the headlights over from side to side and see if one of them has the low beam burned out, or if it's a wiring/connector issue.
Take nothing for granted over 10 years..... check it again because it makes for comprehensive troubleshooting.
2X. I think it's the dimmer switch messing up causing the headlamp switch's internal relay to bounce on and off. Either that or you got some aftermarket super bright headlamp bulbs in there the factory system can't handle. They draw too much power. If so, do the relay swap.
2X On the dimmer switch & I remember some of the c/s 70's had a relay just under the dash on the passenger side just forward of the floor side vent and up. They make a clicking sound just like a bad light switch internal relay..
Also check light wiring connections on the inner fender wall just near the hook hinge.
This area has the 4 prong rubber weather plug. The inner terminals get corroded and cause goopy things happen to your head lights.
